THIS THREAD got me thinking about Montezuma's Revenge.
In modern life, diarrhea is a minor or major inconvenience. If it gets too bad we see a doc and stay home for a few days. But in a survival situation, it can be devastating, even deadly. Diarrhea kills people mostly by dehydrating them. And in a survival situation, the pain & weakness it causes can be a hazard, too. What's the best way to QUICKLY rid one of the symptoms of diarrhea? |

Immodium can be a bad idea. Do not use it if there is blood in the diarrhea (or if it is 'tarry'). In these cases, you should consider using your antibiotics (if TSHTF) or going to your doc (if TS has not HTF). Blood indicates a potentially invasive bacterial infection. Stopping-up the flow with immodium prevents your body from purging the beasties and may set you up for more severe illness. Whe I go out on medical missions we do not treat diarrhea in our patients OR in our team. The only exception is immodium used when we're in transit and will not have frequent bathroom access. Even then, bloody diarrhea is a contraindication. Make sure you're replacing the fluid volume you're losing. Lots of water and gatorade (one sip water for one sip of gatorade), oral rehydration salts, homemade rehydration salts (see 'Where There Is No Doctor'), etc. |
