What one would you chose from the list above and why?

2/2/2009 12:01:26 AM EDT
[#1]
7.62X51     NATO

Noticed you didn't put an AK47 or any of it's varients on there.  Not that it would have changed my vote from the AR15, but I'm sure some people would pick it.

[#3]
My m1 garand, because its rock solid, K.I.S.S., 30.06, and i have over 1500 rounds in enblocs in bandoliers for it. and its never let me down, I hunt with it, and practrice with it all the time. second would be my AR then my M1A.

IT WAS A TRICK QUESTION...Mossy 500 , not a rifle..it's a shotgun.

+1

Ya got a Mosin on there on the same poll w/semi's  and no AK option? Strange poll, but I'll pick the AR
2/2/2009 2:27:47 AM EDT
[#7]
My STG-58 but out of the ones you put up there I'd say M1 or M1A
2/2/2009 2:30:00 AM EDT
[#8]
AR-15 plus 22LR conversion kit, the best of both worlds
2/2/2009 3:45:37 AM EDT
[#9]
I said SKS becouse of the lack of AK option. Simple, solid, and reliable. Hard hitting caliber as well.
2/2/2009 4:36:08 AM EDT
[#10]
From this list, AR-15. It's all about ammo availability. No ammo = just a heavy ass stick.

i would have picked the AR either way but...... NO AK in a "what gun" poll = FAIL
2/2/2009 5:19:24 AM EDT
[#13]
AR due to parts and ammo considerations.  If neither were an issue, my choice would be the M1 Garand.
2/2/2009 5:34:45 AM EDT

FAL,
But then again, I like to be different!!

I have owned a lot of those and shot most of the rest of them.

From that list it would be an m1a most likely.

But in reality it is a fal.

I mostly recomend military designs that use magazines to folks.

But I can say I expect my finish mosin nagant to keep on going long after I am gone, that is

one heck of a rifle.

I voted AR for a lack of better options.  I agree that there needs to be an AK/FAL/G3 option
on there.

The reason there is no AK on this list is because that is NOT in my collection. That is a simple list of firearms I currently have in the safe and all I have room for on the poll. I may have to sell some so I thought that I would get an idea what not to sell.

Yes I know this a AR15,com and will take that into consideration.

I see somebody voted Mini-14... Anybody going to owe up to that vote?
2/2/2009 8:41:10 AM EDT

AR-15 of course, this is after all, AR15.Com !

Nice rifle and rig.  My M1A is the "go to" gun also.

You didn't have 2 of my first 3 picks on your poll: AK47, followed by FAL.

I voted SKS which is my 2nd choice after AK.

So in order: AK, SKS, FAL.

I do have an AR, just wouldn't choose it as a SHTF carbine unless I had to.
2/2/2009 11:16:10 AM EDT

M1A/M14 is my main battle rifle of choice. It covers all the bases.

Although I personally own an AR15. I picked M14 just because of the larger caliber. I figure it can function as both a solid Semi Auto Battle Rifle, Long Range Rifle and a Hunting Rifle for larger game. But the AR15 would be a close second. If I could only have one rifle though I would pick the larger caliber.

I voted AR.  I would have voted AK if that was a choice.  My personal choice is the AK.  I do have an M1A but for most people the AR is a better choice.

Yeah, I'm one of the three. Carried a M-1 in ROTC, got the thumb. Carried a M-16 in the Army. I liked it. Now I have a WASR and a Mini-14. The Mini has surprised me. For a SHTF its not a bad little rifle for a old timer. Light-weight, uses a light-weight ammo., It shoots every time, doesn't scare the sheeple. I carried a WASR during Rita, noticed a difference with the sheeple- they were alarmed (including a LEO). With the Mini it was like no problem. That said I still prefer the WASR in 7.62. WJ

You need an AK !

what?  No lever guns?  What kind of SHTF  battery is that?  :)

Ar15 simply because they are so versitle and convertible to several calibers some of which do not require special mags... I have a 10.5" SBR I built that is dead on accurate and small enuff to conceal very easily. Course I'd also have my mossy 500 cruiser slung across my back, just never know when ya might need to blast something open with a deer slug!

AR-15.  It's the platform I'm most trained/experienced with.  It's ergomonics are 2nd to none.  Any part is replaceable with handtools and can be accomplished by a 3 fingered monkey.

Ammo & magazines are abundant, and I have a wide varity of calibers to choose from.  Caliber of the rifle can be changed quickly by swapping uppers, or with a MGI upper by swapping barrels.

With a 5.56 upper I can also shoot it as a .22LR for training or even small game gathering by replacing the bolt carrier group with a conversion bolt.

Add to the fact it's rugged, extreamly reliable, low recoil (for most rounds) and light enough weight all the members of my family can use it if something were to happen to me.

That was me... It's a protest vote! I would choose an AK over any of the guns listed, but if I had to grab something else the NRA special edition Mini-14 would work for me.

I picked 10/22 in protest for there not being an AR15/.22lr conversion combo. Seriously...... the best of both worlds.

And how in the hell can you leave out AK?!?! I mean seriously.

I love these threads... this can be debated until the cows come home... I love my ARs..  but there is only one real answer for TRUE SHTF...   AK-47 the all around winner.  Accurate enough and takes a lickin and keeps on tickin.

According to the Richard Venola, the editor of Combat Arms magazine was quoted on the Military Channel's Top Ten Combat Rifles.  "If I had to go to a planet, an unknown planet and I was allowed to take one firearm, it would be an AK-47. When Western civilization melts down I want an AK-47."

AR 15, bitches.

AR15...    Have had some of the others but all around the AR is for me.

Long range accuracy for hunting and protection. Plenty of affordable ammo
, mags and parts. Plenty of knock down power for big game if you
use proper bullet. Vmax, ballistic tip etc.

Can carry alot more ammo with you as opposed to some of the big bores.

if i had a cold i would choose Vicks 44D

if SHTF i would go with AR15, but i dont have one so..... i'd have to go with SKS, because i do and i can feed it too.

If the S really H's TF, like Sam Elliot said in We were Soldiers "Sir, if the time comes I need one, there'll be plenty lying on the ground. "  So, if you could only have one, train and get good with what will be lying on the ground.  At least that's what makes sense to me.  That being said, I have an AK .  But I smell an AR for graduation.... (Wishin upon a star, may the wife read this and get a bit of inspiration.)

M1A scout

with an AR over the back!

As much as I love my M1A.... I'd probably have to grab my M4A3 if I could only carry one. I dunno... it's hard to say no to 7.62 thump...

Quit asking me such hard questions! I'll just have to find a way to take more than one. I want 'em all!

Had to go with AR.

AK, FAL, then SKS would be my subsequent choices.

30-30 ammo is very common. Easy to find everywhere.

For myself I would go with the AR. I have way more parts, ammo, experience and mags for my AR's than anything else. That and the probable availability of other "sources" for parts and ammo make have to choose it. And my wife and kids would have a much better chance of hitting what they were aiming at with the AR, at least for the 2 shot and any subsequent shots they made.

I'm torn  I have several AR varients which is typically my top choice, but I must say my M1A Bush (Scout) is probably the better pick for some scenarios.  I've used it for hunting several times; it as great ergo's; the 18" barrel is quite handy; 20 rounds of 308 is pretty substantial and it's deadnuts reliable.  The only downside is humping a 9-10 pound rifle for extended distances...

If I was in any type of area where there was thick vegetation (limited visibilty) or any urban/sub-urban areas, the AR would be more than enough.  I have hunted and bagged a nice doe with a .223 soft point...dropped like a rock.  AR's are much lighter in general and you can carry more ammo if you're on foot.

So, if I'm hanging out at the house or in a rural bugout location, I'll take my M1A...

If I'm tryinig to bug home, or on foot trying to get from A to B, then I'll take an AR

AR15 for the large capacity magazines, easy to carry multiple loaded mags without too much weight.  Accurate and lightweight.

M1A simply because it is 7.62x51NATO.  Gives you the ability to reach out and touch someone, with enough energy/velocity to thump 'em.
2/3/2009 4:13:45 AM EDT
[#50]
FAL, nothing says piss-off like 20 rounds of 308 from a semi.

With the AR for the weaker folk. Sometimes those poodles just wont leave you alone.
