Alright - this is prompted by last nites shooting in G'bor at the movie Notorious.  I posted this linnk in GD:
http://www.news-record.com/content/2009/01/17/article/shooting_erupts_at_notorious_movie

The report states a stampede ensued after the shooting.  Lets place this event in the mall, ballpark, etc.

Tell me what you do in places like these to be prepared inthe event of a stampeding crowd.  How would/did you avoid injury or getting trampled to death?

We may see more of this as tensions rise and when there are terror attacks here like Mumbai.

I am  almost neurotic about NOT going to places like that.  I won't say I never do, but I just don't like big crowds.  If you are in the middle of the crowd, I think you have to go with the flow or get trampled.   If you are on the periphery, I would assume you assess the situation and quickly decide if the danger is worse than the danger of trampling??

Yeah - you have to make a decision on what to face for sure.  But in the case like this, think about it from the aspect of surviving the stampede.
Things to block the flow like pillars - ever notice how in a fast stream, the downstream side has swirls and stuff deposits there?
Things like looking for ways out, how to protect yourself in the crush.

Just like bugging out –– situational awareness and go first

Just like an airplane –– know where the exits are, front and back.  And how many rows to get there.  And don't only think of the aisles, you can climb over seats to get a an exit it the walkway is blocked.

Like a hurricaine evac, don't go right in the middle, maybe bugging in is best if the crowd gets going.  stay in a seat, assess the alternatives, move decisively when you go.  You don't have to go with the sheeple.

If a stampede happens, I would find a nook or out-of-the-way place to hold up until it passed. You don't want to suffocate or get trampeled. Unless you're close to the exit and you can be one of the first people out, I wouldn't take my chances chest-to-chest with everyone else. No matter how much you weigh or how strong yo are, you've got the weight of dozens of people pressing up against you. The first person through the door could easily get tripped, fall down and have everyone walk across them.

You want to avoid such situations.

Duck into the restroom, storage room, climb up on the handicapped water fountain, jump over the concession stand, etc.
