I keep $2 bills.
i have $500-600 worth right know.

My thinking is if the shtf and i need something and whoever has what i need tell me it is $7 and i only i have a 10 or 20 dollar  bill they say sorry i have no change and i really need that gallon of gas or what ever it is. i lose $3 or $13 dollars.

but if i give them 4-$2 bills i only lose $1.

also i can save them better than putting $20 bills in the safe.

It has even got funny at the bank, i come in and the cashier sees me they start asking who has and $2 bills.

I have had the teller call me at home after leaving the bank asking if i want the $150 worth of $2 bills that she just got.

Holy crap thought i was the only one who does that. I have about 500 bucks in 2$ bills. about six months ago at the bank i deliver mail to one of the tellers who knows im allways looking for weird money shows me a banded stack of them with consecutive serial numbers.

LOL, Like these?

I've been keeping these more for my fondness of Jefferson but it's good
to know they might have some special advantage in urban survival! Extra crispy too!

Still a good ideal to stock 5s, 10s, 20s, and 50s. 5s,10s, and 20s being the essential must-haves IMO.

100s seem to the one bill most people distrust and refuse so I want no part of them (I'm not that loaded anyway
).

i always keep a stash of cash, altho in a serious shtf scenario it will be worthless probably

Barter barter barter.

Part of most SHTF scenarios will be economic collapse...not that we have any chance of that? huh?

Hard goods will always carry real worth and value.   Whether it's fuel, firewood, food, water, ammunition, knives, cigarettes, liquor, tools, lumber, nails etc.

Ask folks who have gone through a hurricane,  and many weeks without power...what would a small genny and 50 gallons of fuel be worth?  Probably more than gold and certainly more than a stack colored green paper.

It's good to have some cash to survive within the confines of the current system,  but should the "system" blow up,  barter and trade of hard goods will be the new defacto system.

I tried to keep 5.10. and 20's but i keep using my safe as an ATM. $2 bills have been the most successful way for me to not spend money o trying to save.

IIRC the Treaaury is going to stop issuing the $1 bill ($1 coin instead) & the 2$ bill will be the lowest paper denomination.  Likely with inflation raising it's ugly head in a year or so, we may see the $500 & $1,000 dollar bills come back.
The plan here is to keep as much in silver coins (rounds & junk) as cash...  One or the other will be likely be accepted when the guy that has the chicken that I want & I don't have the .32HR Mag. ammo that he wants or the injector for his Case tractor!
For small items to trade, I also keep spices- small bottles of pepper, chili powder, garlic salt, cinnamon etc.  ... a buck at the dollar store NOW!  Future????

Some of each . plus I keep a SMALL amt of silver AND gold  .

Barter is always good . Some things do go bad . watch expirations . Even spices loose potency after several years 3-4 .

one book I read said tha .22 lr ammo would be a basis for coinage .

Yep,  I don't have 10K of .22 because I think that I will shoot that much in the next 10 years... but maybe!  So many CATS ... so FEW recipies!

When I lived in ohio I enjoyed a winter ice storm that knocked power out for 4 days.

After the first day you could get around without much trouble, 4x4 and some smarts were useful but more than a few folks in beat up old cars managed to get around without getting stuck as well.

One of the local general stores out in the country had no power to run his register and the lines were down so plastic could not be checked to see if it was good.

He knew a lot of his customers and I could have run a line of credit since I lived in the area but instead I had cash.

I always try to keep some rolls of quarters around, sometimes rolls of dime and nickels as well.  Pennies just go in a coffee can as well.

I also try to keep a lot of 1s, 5s, and 10s around.  Normal everyday stuff is done with 20s for the most part, paying bills and all that fun stuff.

Anyway, I had almost exact change without much effort and when he said he was short on 1s and 5s I said I would wander back by with some more for him.

A lot of people had big bills and some were driving out to where there was power for the atm machines but all they could get were 20 dollar bills until the bank actually was open.

I already knew this guy who owned the store but I got to know him a lot better simply because I could help him make change easier.

These days I keep pennies because I am too lazy to roll them and turn them in.

Quarters get used for laundery so I try to keep some of them around.

1s, 5s, and 10s are mostly what I try to keep around and not spend.  I find it easy to save money up this way as well.

I used to have a lot of oddball stuff like $2 bills and $1 coins and what not but I got rid of most of em because I saw them as neat and tried not to use them.

And the $1 coin was the gold colored coin with the indian gal on it, not about to try to spell that name this early in the day.

The more money you put back, the larger the bill denominations will be.

They're like ammunition.  Eventually you will want to get ammo cans and start stacking them.

Try carrying a couple thousand in $20s in your billfold and you'll get the idea.

My billfold limit is $400.

$2 bills are great for tavel too. We take them when we go to mexico or the caribbean. $2 bills arnt really passed around much so they work awesome for tips. I dont know if they are seen as special or what but they they make a $2 tip work just as good as a $5 one.

At first glance they think it is a $20.

I keep both large and small for all the stated reasons.  Large bills are no good in a situation where you need to make change.  Small bills take too much space to store or carry larger amounts of cash.  So you need a mixture of both.  Same with coinage, I keep quite a bit, some loose some rolled.

You guys that are buying stuff to trade in a barter only society need to realize you are buying stuff for an event that has almost zero chance of happening and if you are buying stuff you don't need you are throwing your money away.  Even in the worst of SHTF events, currency will remain.  This has been proven historically.  If you have little bottles of spices, how are you going to trade them for what you need?  A couple bottles for a gallon of gas?  What if you need to fill your tank?  What if the guy who has a large tank of gas doesn't need any spices?  There is a reason humans invented money and it's because the barter system does not work.
