I just found this site which can be used to notify friends/family if you don't return from a trip/outing as planned. It's not as fancy as SPOT so they don't know where you are, but at least they know that you might need help. It's $9.95/yr for an individual. Not a bad price for a little piece of mind.

I think I might do the free trial for my next hike to see how it goes.

That is the damnest thing I ever saw.  Hey, next time you go to the airport, how about I give you $20 and you buy that instant insurance for me - just in case.

Damn!

I got an e-mail 3 weeks ago titled "IMPORTANT! Bob has sent you a message from SendAnSOS.com!"

I flushed it with the rest of the spam and now Bob's MIA.

I make it habit to let people know where I am going and about when I will return, so they can shoot up some flares for me if I don't get back. I own a spot and it works OK in some locations, but not so well in others. I use it mainly for long motorcycle/dual sport rides, then my wife can pull it up and see where I am at any given time. Tends not to work under heavy canopy though, from what I've seen. It's not bad for the money though.

I'm sure that some folks will find it useful. Thanks for sharing it. Apologies for the humor.

No worries.

I've wondered about the SPOT. Seems like it might be nice to be able to send exact coordinates. Just finished reading "Into The Wild" so maybe I'm feeling a little safety conscious.
