I have recently converted an AR-15 to a standard A2 stock, 20 inch barrel, rail interface with bi-pod.

This is what I am trying to make:

I need a good scope recommendation.

This is the one area I am weak at as a rangemaster.

I have tried the 3-4 power units and was not happy with what I saw.

I would like a little more power.

Here is my problem.  I know Leupold is the best, but it is also very expensive.

How about a Nikon ?   Redfield ?  Simmons ?

Will they hold up or should I just "pony up" the price of a Leupold ?

What power should I get ?  3X9 ?  6X14 ?

I believe I want the turret top type for adjustability.

What is the consensus of the SF group here ?

nikon makes good glass
there are other mid range options available too, but you might wanna post this in the precision rifle forum, there is actually a similar post near the top in there now

for turrent style, I think super sniper is going to be one of the cheapest (and still good) options

I own Nikon and Leupold scopes on most my rifles and they are great scopes.  However, I recently put a Burris Fullfield 2-7 power scope on my 20 inch AR.  The scope is just right for the rifle.  I used YHM 1/2 inch risers and a set of high rings to mount the scope at the right level.  I am very happy with the setup and the looks.

Millets, I have a TRS-1 I paid about 320 for it. Google is your friend.

It is on my Coyote rifle 24" bull barrel, the Coyotes hate it. Made a 350 yard shot to the sholder in very cold conditions last year and the scope never fogged or gave any distortion.

I have a Leopold but the same scope (if they even made one) would have cost more than the rifle.

ETA: Make sure if you mount a 50mm you get the extra high mounts.

I put a Bushnell Legend 5-15 x 40 on my Remington 700. They run for around $200 and it has a Mil-dot Reticle. It is very clear and you won't find many Mil-dot scopes for the price. I've also heard great things about the Nikon Buckmaster Scopes. They run for around $290 to $320 depending on the power with a Mil-dot Reticle.

Will the Burris and the Nikons hold up as well as the Leupolds ?

The Millett TRS-1 looks pretty good.

Midway USA quotes $359.   I will shop around.

Thanks !

It kind of depends on what your using it for.

I have a Leupold 2.5-8 on my 18" AR and its about perfect for most things, IMO. If i were to get anything else, i would probably get a Nightforce 2.5-10. But thats going to the other side of the expensive line

Burris and Nikon both make good scopes, with the edge for the better glass probably going to Nikon. I think something in the 3-9 range would be fine for most uses, but you might have to jump up to a 4ish - 14ish if you were going to be shooting alot of smaller things at longer ranges.

scopes

Sold off my Leupolds to buy these. Better warranty, cheaper, same glass.

And their office is ten miles from my house. Any time I build an AR I add a Vortex scope.

Can't go wrong.

Burris does, and has a forever warranty.  I only have one Nikon, and have not shot it enough to offer an opinion.

Look at SWFA (site sponsor) for optics prices.  They also offer the sample list of used and demo models at reduced prices.  I have bought several used scopes and a used spotting scope from them and have been pleased.

I have a Nikon Monarch UCC 3.5-10x50 (6604) Illuminated reticule scope that I paid $449 from the SWFA Sample List and I have been very please with it.

Leupolds are very good but by far the best. Try doubling the price of a Leupold ($1500-2000) and you'll start to hit some of the high-end scopes.

I just ordered a Nikon Buckmaster Mildot for my 700. I couldn't afford a $1K scope for now, so I'm looking forward to the Nikon getting me through.

Someone mentioned above a better warranty than Leopold. I sent them a scope I got third hand with an elevation turret stuck it was screwed in so hard (previous owner had it on a side mount). I mailed it in with a letter asking them to please let me know how much it would be to fix before they did any work on it. A few weeks later I received the scope in the mail fixed free of charge. Pretty hard to beat a warranty like that.

Why put a high dollar scope on a 400 yard rifle ?

Reevaluate the effective range of the caliber, and the true accuracy of the rifle ( is it sub MOA ? ).

I would put something durable on it that works at 200 - 300 yards, and save the big bucks for a GOOD scope on a 30 caliber bolt gun.

While I usually use a .30 cal at longer ranges, I also shoot my 5.56 cal AR at 600 yards.  With the Sierra 77 gr matchking or 80 gr if single loading it is capable of shooting well at 600 yards.

I believe the only MD TT style scopes under 200bucks that are worth anything are
bushnell MD 10x40 fixed
simmons(buy bushnell) MD SF TT 6x21x44
bushnell banner/legend MD
and those fixed swift scopes
but ask around as much as you can.

I bought a weaver grand slam for one of my hunting rifles a few years back. It really upset a buddy of mine how crystal clear it was compared to his leapould gold ring. I couldn't be happier with the scope. I think it was only $200-$300 dollars IIRC.

I also have a nikon monarch that I don't like because of the eye relief. I also have some simmons, springfield and other various scopes. For the money, the simmons is decent enough.

While leapould make nice scopes, I don't think they are as good as swarovski or night force, but those are very high dollar.

Thanks. I prefer to buy American and will probably get a Leupold Mark 2 (they're also a local company, so my money stays here), but may consider a Nikon or Burris. Just don't want to give money to communist China. I've heard some Nikons are made there, some aren't.
