While killing some time today waiting for my wife, I wandered into a Sport Chalet store and checked out the camping gear. I came across a replacement cap for Nalgene water bottles that had LED lights in it that shine into the bottle. The pictures on the package show it being pretty bright, claiming it will turn your water bottle into a latern. The package also said it will fit all the large mouth bottle from various makers. I can't recall the brand name, but it was about $20. I tried to find it on the web but did not find the same brand, but I did find this:

Solar powered LED cap. I am not usually one to get excited about gadgets, but this seems pretty cool to me.

Anybody have one, or one of the battery powered versions? The one I saw in the store took AAA batteries. I am curious what the battery life would be and just how bright they would be. I am sure it would depend on the bottle color and clarity. I tried shining one of my key chain LED lights into a Nalgene and it seemed to give more light with the bottle about half full of water. Definitely enough to let you see what you are doing for basic tasks, nothing to perform surgery under by any means.

Anyway, I don't remember having seen anybody mention them here, so I thought I would toss it out for the hive to ponder.

I have the led cap for the Nalgene. It is ok, kind of a gimmick but fun to have. If you don't mind spending the 20 bucks for something that doesn't really have a practical use go ahead. I know I did and I don't regret it.

I have the Firefly; works great.

I put it on a yellow bottle, and it emits a nice glow with water in it.

I used Energizer Lithium batteries to save weight and for longer battery life.

I have this one on a blue bottle. It does cast a nice soft blue light. Works great if you only want a little bit of light.

Cool idea, anyway.
