I have five or six of the 5 gallon metal gas cans.  Where do you guys store gas in volume like that?  I have a workshop that is not attached to my house but still was not sure if it was a good idea to store 20-30 gallons locked inside a building like that?  I don't live in the country so I don't want to just put them outside for fear they will grow legs...

There was a recent thread on building a locker in your yard.  I think a lot of us are struggling with this one right now.

Yep.  I'm thinking about getting barrels and burying them such that only about 4" is above ground- mostly to reduce the risk of dirt getting into the fuel.  Buried would reduce the risk of tipping and leaking, as well as keep the temp of the fuel moderated quite a bit.  A new steel barrel with a good coating of roofing tar on the outside should be quite stable for a long time.

Any thoughts?

I have been thinking about building a small low to the ground storage box off the back of my shop maybe.  Something not much taller than the cans, have a sloped roof on it that opens like a toy box that can be padlocked closed.  Leave openings in the sides around the top to let the gas vent out...so far thats about the best thing I have come up with...

This is what I did.  It's been in use for a year with absolutely no problems.

Definitely away from the house.  If that many gallons of gas caught on fire, you'd pretty much have to let it burn itself out.  Be careful, safety first.

Not the most secure storage but you get the idea:

Flammibles are in the shed.  Gas, kerosene, propane (tank and bottle) bulk lamp oil, white gas. Paint thinner too.
