What kind of container would I need to bury misc items such as ammo, food, clothes ect...in the ground up to maybe 2 years and have it last? Good 5 gal buckets?

6" PVC pipes, with a cap on one end and a threaded fitting on the other.

There was a thread a while back where somebody dug up a cache of five gallon buckets that had been burried for a good while. As I recall the items were mainly food and faired very well.

I can't remember any detail to search on or I would try and link it. I'm pretty sure it would be in the archive by now though.

I wouldn't use the threaded ends unless you use caulk to seal the threads. Just to make sure. Personally, I would use two end caps and bury a hacksaw blade in a 1" tube next to it, with a big rock to break it open. Not as fast to open, but some piece of mind.

Or if you really want to bury some stuff. get a 55 gallon drum. Fill it, put the lid on and coat it with bedliner, then bury it. Just make sure that anything that you bury is below the frost line. Or it might come poking up through the ground.

Note: I have never buried anything other then my dog's Smokey, Poopie and Blacky. But my Granddad was a plumber, and I stayed at a Holiday Inn Express last night

They sell 55 gal drums that have screw on lids.  I would know nothing about using one of these with a brand new rubber gasket and lots of lube on the gasket and maybe some caulking for good measure.  These stand up very well.  I actually think they store pickles in them.
