I was thinking in the time of a serious disaster, it might be necessary to be awake for extreme periods of time and on the move during that time. So what various stimulants(legal good idea) that someone should keep in the BOB just in case and what would be too dangerous, for example staying up more then X days. Opinions wanted!

IBTM

Not a good idea to try and remain awake for extended periods of time.  Your motor function ability decreases over extended periods of being awake.  Get a network of friends together now, before you need them.

If it is a serious enough SHTF situation, your natural adrenaline will keep you awake.
You should not need anything to do this for you.

I have noticed though some troops in Iraq taking stuff like ripped fuel to stay alert and awake for long periods of time.

Still not the best idea after being awake for 24 hours you are about as impaired as a low level DUI.  I stay up 24-36 hours several times amonth and ocassionally 2 times a week.  After a certain point I do nothing other than read or the computer because of this.

"Stims" 200mg Caffeine Tablets.

Best use I have is that I need to take sleeping pills to sleep through the night.  Often this leaves me "fuzzy" in the morning for a few hours.  Eating or coffee works, but takes time.  When I'm laying there wishing for 10 more hours of sleep, I pop a 200mg Tablet with some water (always by the bed) and let myself doze off...10 minutes later I am good to go.

I've switched to tablets since coffee tears my stomach up, and I have to wake up to get the coffee.

That being said, I wouldn't use "stims" to continue without rest, but I do use them to wake from poor rest, insufficient rest, or lack of motivation.

Caffeine tablets may be a bit much for people when you first start taking them, but you can break them in half/quarter to meter it out.

Well, the military experimented with modafinil (Provigil, from Cephalon) to help troops and pilots stay awake. Notice the past tense.

There's really no way to safely and effectively extend your waking hours with drugs. You're best bet is to make some friends and form a group when TSHTF.

Stims just make you alert for a while longer, but once they wear off you crash really hard.

For an extended use situation, they are not a wise idea.

Because of the all the Painkillers I'm on it's hard for me to "get going". I was put on Provigil first but that made my heart really race and I couldn't keep my arms still. Now I'm on Dextroamphetamine which just get's me wake and alert. It also make my mind focused. I felt safe when I read it's to "go to" pill for B-2 pilots. But I agree with everyone else that these are for special situations.

Better idea would be getting in little naps whenever you can
