I am thinking about building a wind mill. Probably 6' dia. I would love to see some plans on different types of windmills, but I am more concerned with the actual generator head and battery storage options.

I would like to be able to store any power I don't use, so the battery would basically smooth out the power flow from the windmill.  This would be a many month project so I can spend some time studying blade design.

The actual construction should be the easy part!

Bat,

Start reading Home Power Magazine to start learning.  They have some do it your self stuff on the website.

If you are actually looking to build the windmill these guys are the place to go : Other Power

+1 other power assembles all of their own components, great info.

look here as well

have you done a years worth of anenometer readings?

highly recommended to give you real guidelines on how much potential you have in your situation.

I will look into it, but I do not remember the last calm day at the farm. It is just south of Lake Erie and the wind blows all the time. Hard to do long range shooting because its just too windy for my AR with my limited skills. The wind averages 5 mph on my wind speed meter. Wind is only calm in the evening when the weather is nice.

I am not going to buy the major components. I will build everything that I can build myself. The most daunting task is making the blades. I am figuring on hollow aluminum, but that might change with my sheet metal skills! What ever I do, I am planning on taking advantage of the high torque of a large diameter.

Thanks for the links.

One of the "build it yourself" models I saw showed how to make the blades from large diameter (10" or bigger) and cutting them down.  I looked in my files and cannot find the article.

I am thinking about installing a solar system in my ice house for this winter.

Thanks for the links...

I am anxiously waiting for you to tell me what large diameter "stuff" you make them out of and cut them down.

Ha ha ha.  I'm really sorry.  I was writing an email the same time I was replying to your post.  I'd better check that email too.

Large diameter PVC pipe.  I'm almost certain there was a post on in this forum telling building your own wind turbine and there was a link to another site in that article telling all the details.

I was looking for the article on building the blades and found something better HERE.  This has a bunch of link to all different types of Do It Yourself wind power stuff.

This is the story I was referring to in my earlier post.
