| So I want to buy 15 blankets for my preps. I was looking at wool blankets like you from army surplus or the Red Cross hands out. However I am confused. I've found that are varying wool percentage. What's best. Or are wool blankets even best?? Thanks |

You can tell a lot about a wool blanket by comparing the given size and weight. Cheap blankets are thin and light weight...good ones are thick and heavy. So far the best size/weight ratios I have seen are the Swiss blankets and the German "government property" blankets recently available (last year or so). When I bought 4 of those german ones from CTD (locally) the counter guy bitched about how heavy the four damn blankets were and wanted to know if they were made of lead! I smiled as I paid less than $18 ea for these old, heavy blankets. I wouldnt dream of putting one in a BOB/GHB but for a static location like BIL/BOL they are the best! I have read good things about the Italian blankets after the mothball smell is cleaned out of them. Personally, the Swiss and German stuff has done me good Example 1 link Example 2 link Both of those blankets have been, in the past, readily availible for less than $20 each..often with free/cheap shipping. |

CTD and Sportsmans guide both have good deals on wool blankets. The Swiss one is awesome, heavy, big, thick. I keep one in my Jeep. The german ones are good too, nice qualit. I have an Italian, very thick, almos t like boiled wool. Smaller than the other two but still nice. Practiacally new, w/ mothball smell. Stay away from those disaster blankets. They are cheapo, mixed fiber. If you try and wash them, they come apart. I mean like practically end up as a wad of hair and dryer lint! |
| have german and italian ones, way better then any of the disaster ones and even better then the US military ones. The italian ones are the most comfortable IMO, they do stink and you need to put them out in the sunlight for a couple days to kill the mothball smell. |

I have a stack of SPG disaster blankets. (12 for $50ish) One of group arrived filthy like a warehouse floor, or under the whipped forklift storage. SPG replaced it w/o much grief! I very "carefully" machine washed & line dried the greasy one and it came out pretty good. I've used it repeatedly for sex on the ground and it's still OK. IMHO they would last in daily use for a couple years. |
