I know a lot of us are worried about the effects of EMP on our electronics.

What about solar arrays.  wouldn't they be more likely to be affected that the computer in your car?

no sarcasm intended.... what are our chances of encountering an EMP here in the us? I dont even really know how they work. from what i understand they just wipe out all electronics... so i guess cars, cell phones, clocks, and yes even microwaves would be ka-put.

the aggregate capture area is certainly larger.  however, the type of circuits used in solar arrays are designed for high current operation.  hence, i don't think that there is significant risk to damage to a solar array.

just one degreed EE's opinion.  prior to my present position, i worked as an EMC/EMI/EFT/ESD/TEMPEST engineer.

this is utterly incorrect.

is it your opinion, ar-jedi, that cars would be ok?

I read a lot of EOtWAWKI stories and none of the cars work, but the Solar arrays still do.

The controller wouldn't burn up on the assembly?  I am just curious.

+1

I'm not saying that everything i watch on TV is true.   however, i watched a show called future weapons. mack, the host came to MY  town where a naional lab is and they tested a emp device. the car a early 2000's ford car died, then coasted to a stop.

I have read that older radios and transmitters that use vacuum tubes are relatively immune to EMP. Is this true or not?

If so, it may be a good reason to haunt garage and estate sales for those old HAM radios.

ok so i may not know the specifics, but it would all depend on how close you are to it and how strong it is..... so unless you know that you cant really be sure.

this is for the most part true.

this is for the most part very unnecessary.  i cover why in the Ham Radio 101 thread,
www.ar15.com/forums/topic.html?b=10&f=22&t=604477
in a post titled "EMP and ham radio" near the bottom of page 1 (3 posts up from the end).  there you will see an excerpt from the ARRL labs on the performance of modern (solid-state) radios when subjected to an EMP.

That's probably backwards to the way things would really be.
