I am a college student who moves between DC (for School) and South Florida (home). After seeing the direction the country has taken over the past few years, I've decided it would be better to prepare and not have to use use my supplies than do nothing proactive. I read the SF frequently, though this is my first post. Being in a dorm in DC, I have no room/ability to prep, but back at home in FL, I want my family to be prepared.

The problem that presents me is unique due to the fact that my family in florida consists of my single mother, young sister, and two elderly grandparents (mid 70's). We live in an area that is considered to be upscale, in a zero lot line house in a gated community. However, due to the fact that most of my loved ones are not able bodied and there really is nowhere to "bug out" from South Florida, I don't really know what to do to best be prepared. We have a large rotating water supply (about 50 1 gallon jugs and 200 water bottles at any given time, plus the pool in the backyard for washing if need be), and around a hundred cans of food, plenty of flashlights, radios, and medicine (hurricane supplies...'03,'04,'05 were very hurricane active years, and we lived at one point for three weeks with no power). I'm thinking about using up some empty garage space with a few cases of MREs, but is this a good idea? Also, What more is there to do to be prepared. Bugging out isn't an option, so in a TEOTWAWKI event i guess we'd just have to hope that order is restored before the food runs out. What should we do to prep, and more specifically, what can I do to enhance the ability of my family to deal with SHTF in my absence?

Look at Shane's listening to Katrina blog.
It sounds like your family is really well prepared; water, food, and meds all check.
Get the vital documents backed up.
How about smoke alarms, CO detectors, and fire extinguishers?

If you can you might get a couple of handguns.  You don't need the super magnums. Just 22s would do.  22s are cheaper to feed fun to shoot and will allow your family to defend itself at home

this is for TEOTWAKI - off the top of my head ill throw a few things out - 20 guage for the ladies some triple 00 some bird shot some small game shot sme slugs - - fishing equip, seines , poles, trot lines, traps, since you live in FL solar cooker, i havent researched this but a desalinator like on a small boat would be extrememly useful if the water never came back on - if you have access to fresh running water - a water filter - my idea of canned food is 180 cans of dinty moore beef stew - if kept hi and dy - sposed to have a 20 yr shelf life. maybe 10 or so gal of kerosene with 6 kero lanterns - solar panels and batteries would be on the top of my list if money was available.  and the list goes on and on and on...

Light, food , water, sanitation, health items for a month. They should be easily rotated into regular use when out of date.  I always say don't go nuts. Keep a level head in planning. No one in an urban or suburban setting, who doesn't have a hundred acres in the boonies, can adequately plan for a "long term" or permanent TEOTWAWKI!!!

There are plenty of good schools in Florida.  Why don't you attend school there instead and then be close to your family in case problems arise????

FNFAL guy....Free ride to GWU in washington. Couldn't turn down the school of my dreams. I actually hate the state of FL (I'm from MO originally) and we're just waiting for my sister to finish high school before the whole family leaves.
