| lets see your bug out bags and or hear what you got in them. |

Most people have several types of "bags". I have a basic bag in each vehicle that's just filled with the basics: Smallish day pack flashlight flares AM/FM radio roll of TP tarp and ponchos emergency blankets and hand warmers FAK cash & coins knife Coast Guard rations water packets vitamins, OTC meds diapers, wipes energy bars. In addition each vehicle has the breakdown kit, at least one wool blanket, a gallon of water, etc. The idea is that irrespective of BOBs and GHBs, each vehicle is equipped with the basics to spend a night parked somewhere relatively comfortably, one meal covered for the whole family. (or 2-3 days alone) Now my GHB is a larger day pack (about 30#) (GET HOME BAG) has a change of clothes, 2 MREs, rope, knife, FAK, am/fm RADIO, flashlights, a hiker's water filter, nagalene bottle, poncho, emergency blanket, garbage bags, zip locks, cash, coin, fire starters, firearm and ammo.... the "job" of the GHB is to allow me to travel on foot 2-3 days to get home. My BOB is a medium size back pack with a ground tarp, large poncho, 2 man tent, MRS ceramic water filter, Nagalene bottle, hiker's stove and fuel, steel pot, steel fork, spoon, knife, MH meals, oatmeal, tea, sugar, condiments....as well as soap, shampoo, toothpaste and toothbrush... two flashlights (head light and LED) candle and matches, FAK, cash and coin, maps, compass, GPS, am/fm/sw radio, rope, and some clothing. This pack's job is to provide more than basic shelter for the family (wife and 3 kids can fit snuggly in tent, I'd be outside in a poncho/tarp shelter), food again for 1 day or so for all of us or 3 days alone. I have a larger full size hiker's back pack with external frame - that I'd use if we really had to bug out on foot.... that'd have full size sleeping bag, mattress, MREs, pots'npans for cooking, etc. and more food. I doubt my set up is ideal but it is scalable - small, medium, large. I've a 12 person tent (size of a duffle bag), a 6 person dome tent (medium size bag) and the 2 man tent (weights 4-5lbs.), we have a large water filter, the MSR one, and the micro hiker one.... ditto with stoves: large coleman two burner, small single burner propane, small single burner butane.... ditto with radios, etc. large, medium, small. But almost more important than any of this is the consideration of where we'll be "bugging out to" since a family on foot realistically is reduced to a 15-25 mile radius before their food runs out (unless the kids are grown and can carry their own provisions...)I'm assuming a 7-8 mile per day hike, which is long for little uns. I'd not "plan" on any trip longer than 400 miles or one full tank of gas. If it's beyond that then plan on storing more than 15 gallons of stabilized fuel because chances are your tactical minivan won't be on "full" when the balloon goes up and you'll need every drop of fuel to make it. GPS and alternative routes off the interstates are a must...because if it's so bad that you need to bug out, it's bad enough for a couple million other people to get the same idea. This is where pre-packed gear comes in handy: it's all about getting a jump on the human tidal wave.... people evacuating from Katrina told horror stories of grid lock and running out of fuel just idling.... a 3 hour trip becoming a 12 hour ordeal. My set up is such that we can be packed and pulling out the drive way within 30 minutes - but all the 'essentials' can be loaded in 5 minutes. I'm assuming the laundry isn't done, or we need to spend time waking the kids up or finding some lost essential tool or item or I need to re-pack, get the bubble top loaded and re-fixed, Murphy's law means I need to siphon one tank out to fill the other, etc. etc. 30 minutes might not be enough but then again, it might be fine - since arfcom is typically 30 minutes faster with breaking news than Yahoo, Google, Drudge or any other news service. |
