I do not think this is the best time to purchase silver but I am curious where is the best place to buy some?  I bought some from a local company who was liquidating there holdings about a year ago.  But I know i will not stumble onto that again.

See if you have any coin stores in your area. Looks for maple leaves, american eagles, etc...
Also see if you can get some lesser grade older foreign silver coins.
Also, many pawnshops have boxes of pre-65 silver US coins- but they charge jacked up prices.

OK - so help me on this.  I want to start a small collection of silver coins - common and cheap and grow the collection to trade up and into better stuff.  What year dimes can I start looking for, and what year quarters?  Are there any nickels that have a PM worth collecting?  My plan is to start with the stuff you can find in circulation so that I dont have to invest too much money, just time and effort.

I thought I was supposed to be collecting 1967 and previous dimes and pre 1964 Quarters - Can anyone correct me.

Thanks.

I collect silver bullion myself; primarily 10oz bars from Englehard & Johnson/Matthey.  You can buy online or in town (if you have a place).  Besides large dealers (apmex, bullion direct, sunshine minting, etc) you can also Ebay and sometimes get a good deal; just depends.

What would you say the advantage to bars over coins is, if any?

The above percentages are based on an ounce of sivler, not the percentage of silver in the coin.

Also missing on that list are the 65-70 half dollars which are 40% silver content.

Edit for spelling

If you understand that the long term value of paper currency is zero, then pm's are always a good buy.

The same of other tangibles such as food, ammo, tools, tires, land, etc.

Eagles and others reserve a premium, so it may be better to have some pre-65 stuff, bars, and rounds.
