Would you rather have 500 rounds of match grade hollow point .308 or 1000 rounds of .308 ball ammo to feed an AR10?

With a reasonable expectation that any encounter will be within a couple hundred yards or (probably much) less, I'd be happy with the 1k of ball ammo.

Now, I do have match grade ammo for my precision rifle to back up the much larger supply of milsurp for the AR.

Ball ammo should shoot minute of man within 500yds or so
I would choose the surplus

It's just the old quantity vs. quality argument.

I would go with the 1000 rnds of surplus. it is not very likely that you will find a target that requires match ammo to hit.

to be really picky... 900 rounds surplus and 50.

Match every time.
Assuming your stocks are good for both already.

I only have 80 rounds of .308 right now so no, my stocks aren't good and I just dropped $530 on a quality optic for it.

as long as you drop what you are aiming for, does it really matter?????

Depends on how I see myself using the gun and scenario.

500 deer is a heck of a lot of deer.

If I can make a wee suggestion, take your time.  Though crime is fairly high probability scenario EOTWAWKI isn't nor is surviving shooting hundreds of rounds at an adversary shooting back without support nor is even using a mag fed semi-automatic rifle for self defense.

Prepare for the most likely first and least likely last.  A little bit here and a little bit there and soon you will know why "Both" is as common a saying on AR15.com as it is.

I do believe in a SHTF stash of ammo.  I think where I started is as good a place as any which is with what you can carry and as good as you can afford.  Giving priority to what firearm you will most likely use.  For most of us that's a handgun.  I then put my money in less expensive ammo since well the potential of me shooting at the range is far more likely than using a semi-automatic rifle for self defense.  I added a little here and a little there and soon your wife is counting your ammo by square footage.

Depends on the capabilities of the rifle and the shooter.  I would choose the ammo that best matches the rest of the package.

you mean 4 minutes of angle?  standard man size silhouette is 20 inches wide.....
one inch at 100 yards is 5 inches at 500 yards....so 4 inches at 100 yards is 20 inches at 500 yards.
