COFFEE, COFFEE, COFFEE

I don't drink alcohol (too much) or smoke but I need the caffeine that I get from my daily dose of coffee.  I don't drink coffee for the caffeine but now I have grown dependent on it.  After a few days (more like a week) I stop having withdraws.   Not wanting to spend the first weeks of a SHTF incident with headaches, I added caffeine pills to my SHTF stuff.  I figured that having them may also be helpful if I needed to stay awake and alert for long periods of time.

Has anyone else taken steps like this to combat the possible loss of something they are "addicted" to?

Same here.  I got some extra cans of coffee and seal 'em up in small mylar bags w/ O2 absorbers.  If nothing else it has potential as a barter item.

In cutting back how much pop I consume I have started drinking more coffee.

But I don't wind up with headaches if I go without.

Personally I would go with decaf or alternatives now so that you can start getting to where you are not addicted to anything.

I did consider the caffeine pills and what not but overall I just decided to fix the problem now rather than trying to fix it later.

I drink a ton of coffee and I have experianced the withdrawel from stopping cold turkey.

2-3 days massive headaches.

I keep caffeine pills in my survival kits to mediate it a bit.

I have been trying to ween myself off coffee for a couple of reasons; the cost, and the detrimental affects of sudden withdrawl if SHTF.  Not as bad as it will be for the crack heads and smokers, but caffeine headaches suck..

I used to get 2 16 oz mochas a day..  Coffee was a requirement, I was all f'd up without it.. a caffeine pill wouldnt keep me awake, just make me feel normal

Now i have a 20 oz travel mug of drip coffee with lots of creamer, in the morning on work days only, and thats it.  working down to 1/2 decaf..

it takes 2 weeks for your brain to yank the caffeine receptors off the cells and for you to get back to a baseline level of sensitivity...first few days are probably the worst...

Amen. The stuff(coffee) has been eating my gut lately. It will be nice to wake up without coffee drinking as the first thing on my event horizon. But then WTF will I do with myself.

Makes all the difference.  Occasionally I'll happen to have some but I steer clear of it.

I have considered it, but coffee is the one thing I keep for myself.  I have also considered decaffeinated coffee, but that is like sex without the "payoff" (it's WRONG).

Same for me but Diet Mt. Dew.  I like Coffee but it gives me shakes if I drink it too fast.  I buy the 24oz six packs of Dew.  1-2 sometimes three a day.  Sad  My teeth hate me

1/2 (4 cups) pot in the morning 1/2 pot after work. I've quit in the past but the rip roaring head ache 24 hours later is not worth it. I've switched around between energy drinks and coffee. I made the switch back to coffee to drop my blood preasure. My blood preasure dropped 12 points. I nead to cut back a bit though.

I've got about two dozen packs of Penguin Mints stashed away - each breath mint is a cup of coffee's worth of my favorite (and only) drug.

Just before Thanksgiving of 2007 I switched from regular coke to caffiene free coke and just before Christmas I stopped drinking soda all together... Why?  Because I hated being addicted to the stuff, was buying more and more of it - two three liters per week or four two liters per week.

I couldn't have made a better choice of stopping intake of caffiene.  I sleep much better at night, get to bed at a reasonable time instead of not being tired until midnight-1am, and best of all - dropped so far 18lbs as of Monday this week.

I had a glass of Coke last week while out at dinner with friends and asked the waitress for a glass of water instead - stuff tasted horrible... I can't believe Coke classic could ever taste bad... but it was horrible.  Same with coffee, it's way to bitter for me now.

Getting off caffiene or even sodas is the best thing you can do for your body pre-TSHTF... do you seriously want to be going through caffiene withdrawls during a seriously stressfull period?  My withdrawls lasted for 2 weeks and everyone noticed how much of a pain in the ass I was.

Dittos
Without my brew, I'd be one of the walking dead!
And in a shtf situation? I've read numerous stories about when the Germans were moving the Allied POWs away from the advancing Red Army: The guys could trade their Red Cross coffee packets to the locals for something like a half pound of coffee would get them 20 - 30 pounds of potatoes or beets.

Caffeine is not all bad. Just try staying awake for more than 24 hours without it. If you have to keep an irregular sleep routine, caffeine can come in handy. I've never had any trouble sleeping when I wanted to, even after some caffeine.
