Anyone use a Volcano stove?  They seem pretty cool and burn charcoal very efficiently, and will also burn wood.

I've asked the same thing about that stove and never found anyone who could tell me a thing about them!

They work very well.  My best friend has one and I have borrowed it a couple of times.  He brings it camping with us all of the time.  It is really efficient with fuel.

I liked it so much that I bought one for my brother for his birthday (it is about the only thing I could get him on a prepardness level that he would like).  He really likes it and uses it all the time.  In fact they work great for dutch oven cooking.

I have the smaller version of the Volcano that they used to make, called a Volcano Jr. or something.  I've used it for years and was always very happy with it.  I only used charcoal, never tried wood.  Doesn't take much fuel.

Doug Miller a prominent Outdoors guy in Utah loved the Volcano stoves.

He liked to burn newspaper in them but IIRC it's been advised here not to burn newspaper in them due to the ink getting into the food.

They are available from Target, as is the Volcano Jr.  I have thought about getting one for a long time, but it has never quite worked out.  Some more info on how well they cook would be helpful.

Get a $20.00 IRON metal cooking grate that folds up. Smaller size (though probably similar weight) and much cheaper. I am NOT talking about the little cheapie flimsy metal grates from walmart's camping department. Look around at the dutch oven stores, I honestly can't remember where exactly I got this. It's seen 10 years of service without a hitch. You can grill meat directly on top or use the grate to hold pots or skillets.

Used to always see this old fellow at the Preparedness expos selling those volcanos. Sometimes towards the end of the shows he would make steak and cut it up for the vendors, it was a nice treat after a long day. I could have sworn he told me you could "only" use charcoal with them though??? If I knew you could use wood with them I would have bought one from him just cause of all the food he gave me over the years!
