Anyone have a liquid filled compass freeze on them?

I've been in the wilderness in -40F temps and never even had the needle
get slow much less freeze.

Now I have had my whiskey freeze (slush)

Nope. But then I really don't get out and hike in below zero weather too often.

They probably use alcohol or silicone oil in them.

Oil filled should have to get really cold to freeze.

When I took my test for the Expert Field Medic Badge some years ago, the temperatures were in the negative digits the day of the land navigation test. (This was in Germany.)  I had no trouble with my issue lensatic compass.  It was in my hand, exposed to the elements for quite some time as I navigated my way through the course.

The GI compass isn't liquid filled.

I've never seen a compass freeze.
But I've had liquor almost freeze too.
Usually keeping it closer to my body - maybe a coat or coat pocket
and constantly keeping it moving by turning it upside down with the cap off and draining small amounts into my mouth !!!

Actually oil freezes fairly easily.... or at least gels up.  I think they use alcohol as a dampaning solution.

The GI compasses are not liquid dampened.  Thats why the needle dances around so much.  Its also why it does not freeze.

Funny you should mention this. I was teaching Land Nav to some folks this weekend, and they had the cheapo Wal-Mart Liquid filled compasses. After a couple hours of temps in the single digits, they were frozen stuck. Fortunately, my GI compass was still functional and saved the day.

This is the compass I bet my life on.

Tru-Nord

It is not liquid filled and I've never had one lead me astray.

All Whiskey comments aside I really haven't seen one freeze. Always had good middle range name brand ones. Now I know my username says FL but my compass malfunctioned!!
Had em out in all kinds of ski related situations and never seen it. Temps all over the place. sometimes compass in a pack , sometimes on it or in pocket when not in use. Gettin to thinkin tho.........
Good heads up on the el cheapos freezing here. I have a few friends that pack lousy ones - I'll tell them. I end up replacing mine often cause I head out with people on short hikes sometimes and they have nothing! So I usually carry a copied map and one of those "decent" compass' and just let them keep them- If they're friends they get the first pitcher!
Thanks for the link to that simple little compass - looks intersting.

YMMV, but I suspect that when you get to where the temp drops low enough for the compass to freeze you'll find yourslf in either the north or south pole regions where the thing's pretty much useless anyway.....

-10 below last night in my AO.

My compass is liquid filled and still works fine. It sits in my GHB in my truck.

-30F here in northern NH, using about 8 different compasses from silva, military, etc.  None froze.

Brrrrrr.
Where's that whiskey again?

I asked this question to some full-time ski patroller friends.
None had ever seen one freeze. And they all carry at least one.

I can't wait to get back to some cold weather and soft snow and try to freeze my compass - and keep the whiskey unfrozen!!!!

does the liquid ever "evaporate" from the plastic compasses? i have a couple that are many years old and the bubble seems bigger than i recalled originally, but i can't really say for sure. would it even matter?  i think not.

..just something that pops into my head from time to time.
