My wife and I were reminiscing about how we spent Y2K together 8 years ago. What was your state of mind? What were you doing? Who were you with? I was on call for as an early-career IT consultant for a major hospital. No alcohol, leave the pager on, stay close. Was with my future wife (just friend at the time) and a bunch of family and friends at my pad. Good times. Lots of worry for us IT folks, but no problems. I was too naive to be prepped out at the time. You? |
| I was living the Magnum PI life. I lived on a friend's big estate in his guest house. He even had a Ferrari but I was too tall to drive it. My friend and his wife were off fishing in the Caribbean. I was alone. I stayed up long enough to see the east coast not go into meltdown then fell asleep about 11:00. |
I was at a spanish New Year's Eve dance club party with my Fiance' and her parents in South Florida... She looked STUNNING in her svelt Red dress, dark hair and glowing smile... I was one of the few there that were non-Hispanic nor spoke Spanish... Had a GREAT TIME! Danced for hours...I was prepped at home though, for who knew what... I just had to drive 5 miles to get there... Figured it was a safe risk rather than hiding at home watching the news for Y2K to hit... We were married 10/7/2000, had a daughter in 2003, fled Florida in 2004, and live happily ever after in semi-rural Virginia... Rmpl |

I was in college, at my wife's (then girlfriend's) apartment. A full tank of gas and a couple of days worth of food was all I had for "preps". It would have been enough to get me home if things went sour. I was aware but not that worried. I am much better prepared now then I was then. Actually, my friend, who was under 21 at the time, got lost in the town and I spent the next 4 hours looking for him. I found him sleeping in my bed about 10miles from where I last saw him. He doesn't remember how he got there but he did call my dad at 1am, collect, for directions. He thinks the gas station attendant where he made the call gave him a lift. -JTP |

I was watching end of days in the movie theater as y2k was to hit. Good year for selling firewood. Noticed that the local walmart had plenty of evrything exept toilet paper. They were completely out. Cops also were edgy. After the movie I went to a vending machine and bought a newspaper. A cop pulled over and flashed around a light to see what I was doing, |
We went to my parents house like we do every year. The only difference then was that 10 minutes after midnight I sneeked out to the breaker box and turned them all off for a few seconds.![]() My mom and sister freaked out, my wife knew it was me because that's the kind of shit I pull all the time. |

Don’t even mention it. Lights went out here 30 minutes before New Year, came back like 2 hours later. We still fired some firecrackers, had fun, but it sucks to start the year like that, specially with 38ºC down here. Oh well, at least my Christmas present came in handy (another Led light) , and it was nice to at least have the emergency lights I mounted to get by for a while. FerFAL |
I was 16 and I was laughing at all the articles in the paper and on the internet about these crazy survivalists who thought the world was going to end. ![]() Look at me now after starting to read this forum a little over a year ago my appartment looks like a cross between a surplus store and a food warehouse. Thanks for opening my eyes. |

On duty in my central office linked via a big assed conference call with 40 or so other switchmen & our network op center. We had a call script with about 30 call to dial to verify quaility beginning a few minutes past midnight. I made about 1/2 the calls, took about 10 min, and checked in on the conf call. NO ONE experience any problems so I didn't waste time completing the rest of the call. It was declared a non-event at about 18min past. I got 2hrs pay at double time while surfin the net. |
| I was at work pulling a nightshift. The rest of the crew of my department were also on hand. I manned the switchgear for our emergency backup generators to ensure if the utility does drop the transfer of power would be smooth. We had our IT guys also on standby in the data center. The IT guys were in touch with their counterparts from the east coast. When the clock struck 12am east coast time and nothing happened here in our side (west coast) we were pretty much fat and happy. Of couse my preps were already on hand just in case. I stuck around at work till 3am then went home. |

I too recalled what was going on 8-years ago. I was in the most pain in my life - little did I know that years and a day later I would still be in pain and crippled for the rest of my life. My "trick" left knee popped at the top step of a 30 foot tall ladder (stair) aboard ship - port side entrance into MMR #2. I fell the 30 feet with my right leg out in front of me - the toes of my foot caught a pipe bending my toes back well beyond their limit tearing the muscles of my leg. |
I was working at Foxwoods, the largest resort casino in the world. I had no preps of any kind, had just enough food in my apartment and fuel for my Blazer for a few days, and I had no weapon other than a baseball bat. Of course, all that has changed since I discovered AR15.com and the survival forum. |

I found a copy of the book post Y2K, and aside from a dedicated chapter about the Y2K issue, this is a good book for folks who are new to preparing. Includes chapters on firearms, barter, food, water, heating, etc. And its cheap. I have a copy I loan out with the Y2K chapter marked out, great for those new to preparedness: www.amazon.com/Y2K-Personal-Survival-Guide/dp/0895263017 Hyatt got it right with that book. |

My wife and I went to a BBQ that night. I brought along a 16,000 strip of firecrackers that we hung up and fired off at midnight. It took a full 10 minutes for it to finish popping. There was about 30 people at this party and no one said a word about what "could" happen at the stroke of midnight. I did pack a Glock for the 15 minute ride home for the "just in case". |

I was on mids that night. Spent it in one of our "finer" project areas listening to the gunshots. It was funny, our entire 600+ department was on duty. You couldn't spit without hitting two cops. Our department had all kinds of stuff stockpiled and ready to be handed out... Most of it is still sitting in storage ares throughout the county. Ahhhh, the good ole days. Remember, gas was about $1.50 per gallon (and we bitched about that) Happy New Year everyone! May this one be better that your previous. |

Stayed home with my family and celebrated the new millenium. Instead of going to the "best party ever" (not my description) on the 50th floor of a building in downtown Minneapolis with all of our friends, which was about the last place within 400 miles that I wanted to be at that time. Last night was the first New Year's since then that no one gave me crap about skipping "the" party. |
Had a GREAT TIME! Danced for hours...
