Looking to stash away some milk for the kiddo in event of SHTF? What should I store, evaporated milk or powdered milk? I tend to think powdered would do better, but what do i know?

Here you go a fantastic site:

Honeyville

I've found most of their freeze dried stuff to be fantastic but the milk is by far some of the best I have ever tried.

even more appropriate for humans is goat milk.

plus you have a better source of meat (especially with spotty refridgeration

besides, what are you going to do with 3 gallons of milk a day you'd get from a cow nowadays anyhow?

Butter? Barter?

Many uses.

There is shelf-stable milk that has been UHT pasteurized.  It tastes just like milk because it is milk, but requires no refrigeration.  You can store it 6 months or maybe a little longer.

The downside is that it's more expensive and will need to be rotated fairly often.

Walton Feed sells powdered milk called Morning Moo and it is very close in taste to real milk.  I've had it with cereal, and the first few spoonsful taste a little odd, but after that, you can't taste the difference.  It also comes in other flavors.

yup, but you better have folks nearby who will barter for it, because it will have a limited life if you have refridgeration problems.    before elec/ refridgerators i think milk was only kept for a day, and delivered or milked daily.    Of course if you have other animals most if not all will drink it, as it is nutritious for all animals i can think of, but i wouldn't want to try and give it to fish.   I've seen chickens, pigs dogs and cats drink it.   I've seen an adult goat drink it any chance she got.

all i'm saying is a cow is big, makes big crap, eats big food, and needs bigger space.    If you have a community of 30+ that you can count on when shtf, then a cow would be easy to utilize completely.    If you have one or two families, a goat would be better.

Oh- and initial cap. costs are MUCH lower with a goat.   I have meat goats, but i'd think you could get  a good (nubian/ alpine/ togg/ saanen) milker for way less than $400 as a yearling.    I don't know what dairy cows sell for, but meat cows are usually well up from $800 as a yearling or less and only go up.

I have been through the milk storage trials. I had/have tons of dried milk, sealed in foodsaver bags. One day we ran out of milk, so I eagerly broke out the preps. The wife and daughter did not like the dried milk. Would it work in a pinch yes.

So, I got Parmalot milk. It tastes good and is shelf stable for over 6 months. Wally World has it for $1.48 a box.

Not sure what method or brand they use, but the resorts down in Jamaica all use powdered milk from the US, reconstituted in country- this according to a recent documentary anyways. Showed 'em making the stuff- they get the powder in some wicked large sacks.
