So here is my situation. I currently live smack dab in the middle of the biggest city in Kentucky. My nearest family is in Brentwood, Tn. which is no better should TSHTF. The rest of my family is in northern Louisiana and east Texas but that 850 miles away. I'm pretty well prepared and getting better every day so I'm set for a bug in of up to a couple of weeks. That time frame will extend as time goes by and when I buy a home. But until then I have no definite BOL. What should I plan to do? I don't want to be one of the guys from 'Lights Out' walking down the road.

Hope that the S doesn't HTF for a few years while you get established with a BOL or BIL that negates the need for a BOL?

Hey ss02, do you currently reside in a house, apt, moble home?  If it is decent enough to bug in and you can build your stocks up then do that...  If not then perhaps start scouting some land or remote campsites that you could BO to if needed...  Maybe look into getting an old used pop up camper or something that could become your moble BOL.  Or make freinds who have some prime BO land...  I would probably go to my girlrfriend's parents house as they are close and have a small farm, weapons, and well water with gen...  They are semi-country...  Thats about the best I got at the moment.  You have to learn to make the best you can from what you have?

Its a duplex. I can bug in but its in a high traffic area. I'm considering a shell on the back of my truck as an instant shelter.

maybe take a trip to the country to see if some old farmer could

use a hand on the weekends as a trade for some "camp-out time''

during the year.  Most any place can use a good coat of paint when

the labor is free.  you never know over time you could be welcome

when the events start to take place.

While I would love to have a BOL, I sincerely doubt that many of us have that fully equipped cabin in the woods somewhere to retreat to.  I am still convinced that the best BOL is an RV or camper that you can drag with your BOV, in case you have to leave your home and set up residence most anywhere else!

Like Protus says, you need to network.

Get out there and make some of the meets that are stickied on the top of this board.  Meet some people, make friends, find people who are trustworthy and then get out and do some training with them.

Maybe one day you'll meet somebody that will sit down and have a conversation with you and invite you to their place if the SHTF.

Not everyone on here can have the perfectly stocked BOL in the mountains.  But a man who does, would probably need honorable people to help him defend it, fix it, plant it, etc..  It's mutual assistance.

" Relax in your fully set up PAW condo, drink cool fresh water from your..............."

meet folks....its where it starts,,,,, worse case  you end up with freinds that are of like mind and views. Something  that can come in handy no matter what the shtf event may be.

Here's what to do. Buy/rent/borrow a camper/travel trailer/RV and start exploring suitable towns, camps, locations for BOL. When you find a location that is suitable, start vacationing (spending  a weekend or week) learning the area and people.

There are lots of private campgrounds around that will let you rent for the season or have a permanant spot. Those regulars form a special community that is all about helping each other out when needed.

I would think that it wouldn't be too hard to find a spot in the backwoods of Kentucky to run to if need be.

Not to state the obvious but 850 miles away isn't that much in gas compared to a extended hotel stay.

Not every scenario is going to limit your time and put you on foot.

For example, during Katrina here where I live was one very popular bugout location.  Very many folk traveled here with their tents and campers to enjoy the cool mountain air until the crisis was over and they could go home.  Many chose this area not only cause it was nice but far enough away it would have room for them and out of the path of danger.

Prepare for the most likely first and least likely last.  I think you will find EOTWAWKI pretty low on the probabilty scale of events to happen.  With proper planning becoming a "Wonderer" or even "Jermiah Johnson" not even EOTWAWKI should put you there.

Plan now and work towards tomorrow.  For now, time is on your side especially concerning EOTWAWKI end of society.  It took some of us folks who have dediated BOLs decades to achieve that goal.  Of course, like all our gear besides "Just in case", its nice to have a secondary use like a vacation spot, huntng camp, or retirement area.

I have a similar situation I live in an apartment but will still BI as long as possible if I must leave I have about 3-4 different locations picked out in remote areas of the Mountains/NF land that I can BO to with my BOV and trailer to ride things out. I'm not talking general campgrounds either as you can imagine lots of people will head for those. I am talking off the beaten path type places say 4wd accessible only. Hunting season is a great time to scout out new places lot's of times you can find old homesteads or other places you can drive to if needed but there isn't neccesarily a road going to them.

If I have to bug out then I'm just going to play it safe and find a stretch of national forest to camp out in.  If something happened that was bad enough that I felt the need to bug out then I'd probably be dead, anyway .
