| What do you keep in your vehicle? (Jumper Cables, fix a flat, etc) |
| I keep a mini survival kit. It has a flashlight, matches, emergency blanket, whistle, compass, mirror, and a few other items. I also keep jumper cables and a jump box/air compressor. But, probably the biggest thing is that I never let my truck get below a half tank. Don't want 1/8th of a tank when TSHTF. |

extra dry cell battery made by stinger, jumper cables, extra belt, permatex black, 4 16.9oz bttls of water, wool blanket, tire repair kit w/extra valve stem, pry bar, 12 volt mini compressor with red light (cheap small but has worked great 1000 times), 1 bottle of green slime, extra fuses, small tool kit made by channel lock, schrade multi-tool, pair of gloves and a skull cap... fyi little cigarette lighter compressor works best if you jack the car up and take the load off the tire while filling it up... |

Here is the short list of what is always in both my truck and the wife's SUV. Sometimes we scale up, but this is pretty much the minimum. First Aid Kit Fire Extinguisher Small but well stocked tool kit with wrenches and small socket set Spare vehicle fluids jumper cables 4 liters of water some rope 2 MRE Tarp Blanket Pair of comfortable shoes for long distance walk. Extra pair of socks in shoes Water proof jacket Bungie cords In winter things like warm jacket, gloves, hat, etc.. go on each also. As mentioned previously, try to keep the tanks above 1/2 full. She's better at this than me. |
Not criticizing here; just asking: Aren't you running a full-sized Blazer? From your list it looks like you want to have enough fluids to refill the vehicle if you have a leak but most engines hold more than four quarts of oil. Have you got a way to plug/fix a leak in the pan (most commonly holed part short of oil cooler lines)? You can use a wooden plug if needed, but having some JB weld with you can be easier. You might want to add some radiator sealant (unless you plan to crimp off or solder the leaky coolant tubes- you'll need vice grips or solder and a butane torch). I've crimped one off in the woods before- not fun. You can use an old bicycle innertube to repair radiator hoses in the field if necessary. You can use brake cleaner to clean carbs if you want to take one of the cans out. Extra points and condenser if your truck uses them. I used to carry one spare spark plug wire (the longest one from an old set) too. I always carry a few spare bulbs (especially headlight). Hella makes H4 replacement light housings that beat the older sealed beams hands down. Make sure you have various hose clamps for all of those hoses. I keep a couple of real road flares in my truck- nothing starts a fire faster in an emergency or when you’re freezing cold and your hands are shaking. Overall it sounds like you have thought it out well. Be sure to keep everything secured so it doesn’t become airborn in the event of an accident/rollover. I carry about that much when I’m traveling, but not day to day. Day to day carry in the truck (off the top of my head; I have a camper shell on the back): Case of bottled water in the bed; several bottles in the cab (I can dump these in the Camelbak if needed) CamelBak BOB/BHB (usual stuff in there) First aid kit (larger than kit in BOB) Benchmade Nimravus (goes in the BOB if I have to leave the truck) Maps (road and topo) GPS Surefire flashlight and Minimaglight Extra batteries Two lighters (Bics) P38 can opener Extra boxes of ammo (I leave several calibers in there for whatever I happen to be carrying) Road flares (real magnesium ones) Wool army blanket GoreTex rain jacket Umbrella Lockbox for handgun (for when I’m at work or going someplace I can’t carry) PA63 with extra magazines, holster and extra ammo in another Center of Mass lockbox (dedicated truck gun) US WWII entrenching tool Tow strap and clevises Toolbox (usual stuff in there including spare bulbs, etc) Jumper cables Viair compressor and tire plug kit Change of clothes and hiking boots (I wear Chacos/Tevas a lot so I keep hiking shoes on hand) Rope and straps If I’m traveling, particularly when it’s cold, I add another wool blanket or better yet a sleeping bag, a Nuwick candle, food and extra water, appropriate clothing, extra fuel can, truck fluids, D-handle shovel, hi-lift, extra tow strap, camping gear, etc. ETA- forgot the fire extinguisher |

Most of the stuff you listed Ive got, I jus cant remember it all. Ive got rad. leak stuff and I need to find a bigger box to carry more fluids. My Truck only takes 4-5 quarts of oil. I carry Lucas oils stuff as well. I actually have an "electrical" box (big ass tackle box) that is dedicated to electrical fixes. It has fuses, bulbs, crimpers, wires, switches, relays. sealants, etc. My list didnt include recovery either, its another bag I keep stashed. In it Ive got 40,000lb tow strap, the good ones, not those cheezy ones with the metal hooks, lol. I carry snatch blocks, ive got a winch and HD gloves, along with jumper cables and a tree saver strap. For winter time, going up north, Ive got tire chains. Like I said, hard to remember what all is in my truck. lol |
I can see why! That's a ton of stuff to carry. I can't remember if I posted this before when we were talking vehicles, but you might really enjoy checking out expeditionportal.com. Some of these guys have been all over the world in their vehicles while some see really hard use locally. Overall it's a great resource.

Just like to add my 2cents about BOV. I thought I had all essential tool, fluids, food. and water. then one day on the way to work my BOV let me down. I had it towed to the dealership, and come to find out someone added some crap to my gas tank!!!! the whole fuel system is now shot. To think that a little $15 locking gas cap could have saved me from this. you can never know exactly how you could be attacked or from who? |
I think that was the very first thing I bought for my truck as a locking gas cap. lol. |
This is pretty similar to me and my wife's kits, we carry spare ammo for our CCW's also. Tow straps too. |
