Well today at WalMart looking at the ammo I saw they had Federal boxes of 550 for 9.88 I figured thats a good price and I don't have a .22 but I am gonna pick one up obviously for fun and SHTF hunting small game. So I bought 4 boxes. What do ya'll suggest, I don't wanna spend too much but I want dependable. |
Besides that you're wrong -- it works well in most weapons I've shot it through -- what does that have to do with his question? OP, what do you want to do with the .22? Pick a rifle, pistol, or revolver, it doesn't really matter too much. .22 is a lot of fun shooting. I like the 10/22, and Marlin 25. And Marlin 60. And Ruger MK II, standard or bull barrel. |
|
Lots of choices; bolt or semi-auto rifle? Pistol? some ideas for you: CZ 452 Lux CZ 452 Scout (neat little gun) mags for the CZs are expensive and limited up to 10 rds. Ruger 10/22 (modifications and accessories galore!) Marlin 22s all nice shooters Browning Buckmark Ruger Mk. II or III Ruger 22/45 Walther P22 (?) |

Federal bulk works great in my 10/22, 22/45, 21A, and M-6 (not to difficult to feed anything in that one.) For rifles, a Ruger 10/22 or Marlin 60 is hard to beat. There are plenty of older .22s worth having, too. There are plenty of nice used Mossberg, Remington, Marlin, Winchester, or Savage bolt guns out there, too, if you want to get deeper into rimfires. For pistols, the Ruger Mk II/III, Ruger 22/45, and Browning Buckmark are all nice guns. For a pocket gun, I love my Beretta 21A. |
| I have over 12,000 rounds of the Federal .22 LR in the 550 round value packs. It works very vell in my Marlin Model 60. It also shoot very well in an almost 60 year old Mossberg Model 140K. I get abour 2 inch groups at a little over 50 yards. This is good enough for me as a survival round for obtaining food. I am about to purchase a Ruger Mark III Target or Hunter model with the 6 7/8'' Barrel so that I will be able to lighten my load, as opposed to carrying the Marlin. I have heard reviews of the Hunter model taking ground squirrels at 60-70 yards. To each his own, but I feel fine carrying this ammo with me. Never had a misfire and everyone has hit right at where I wanted it to. |
That totally answers the question of the original post. (sarcasm if you're dense). Really, if you have nothing good to say or at least be helpful, better not to say anything. Going back to the topic. Alot of the suggestions already posted are good. You can find more info and do a little research here: www.rimfirecentral.com/forums/ .22's are nice cheap fun. Plus it's a good caliber to start a beginner with (kids, wife). Hope this helps. |
+1. All great choices. Every one of them. I have them all except the Buckmark. I like the MK 2 & 3's. Older Winchesters are usually cheap and still fine shooters. Model 190, 250, etc. |
|
Ruger 1022 and the winchester white box is good ammo, I have shot thousands of rounds of the stuff with no problems.....If you can afford it get a ruger 1022 target rifle, Those are the funnest guns i have ever shot and accurate as anything i have ever shot, I would take out my ar's and ak's(when i had them before the ammo got nuts) and end up shooting my 1022 bull barrel the whole time |
|
10/22 works great. Cheap. Love it. Ciener for AR is fun, but not as cheap as a dedicated ruger 10/22 by the time you get mags for it. The Wather P22 gets slammed a lot, but I've had a lot of fun with mine, and it has never misfired with or without a can shooting fed, remington, or rem subsonic. The fed bulk packs work great for me. |

You really can't go wrong with a 10/22. If you have a 1911, consider a conversion kit. I'm going to get Kimber's .22 kit unless someone tells me something negative about their quality.... Also, my friend has a Ruger Buckmark target pistol. Its quite accurate and a blast to shoot. |
| The 10/22 is a great gun, but my CZ452 is more accurate out of the box. You have to spend more to achieve the same accuracy with a 10/22. 10/22 is semi-auto and allows quicker follow up shots. There is alot to be said about that too. I really would hate to have to pick only one of them. |
Idk about their conversions..... but a buddy has their dedicated 1911 22lr it shoots great.... I have a ciener kit... took about 200rnds to break it in but since then it's been flawless....... i also consider this a must have if you have a 1911 |

M4TX: There are literally TONS of different .22's on the market. Many are great, a few suck. From a practical standpoint you really have two choices: Rifle or pistol. Many designs offer various advantages and disadvantages. However, there really are two choices that are really solid. Rifle: Ruger 10/22 It's probably one of the most common .22 rifles on the market. It is ultra reliable, decently accurate, and simply works all the time. For what it is worth I've either bought as gifts no less than six of these things. You simply cannot go wrong with the 10/22. Avoid the gimmick aftermarket junk and simply leave it relatively as-is with the exception of a good optic. Pistol: Again a Ruger. The Mark II .22 or the .22/45. Like the 10/22 they are not fancy. They are simply reliable tools that function well. Revolver: My favourite is out of production - S&W 63. If you stick with either Ruger (and I am NOT a Ruger fan) you cannot go wrong. Frozenny |

If you have an AR you NEED a Ceiner. 10/22 or marlin 60 for a semi auto, marlin 39 or henry for a lever As you see some favor the Rem golden, some like the federal. Myself I spend a little more for the Aguilla boxed stuff but feel free to go with whatever works for you. I like 22s a lot! |

I LOVE the Remington Golden 525 bulk pack though I was told that the package was recently no longer in production (just the bulk pack style). I have shot probably 20,000 to 30,000 rounds of it, mostly in full auto through my M16 w/conversion kit and dedicated upper. It's powerful enough to cycle most of my conversion guns and is plated. It's even hollowpoint if you like that, yet still has a good bullet profile for feeding like ball. Cheap bulk packs also make for much easier loading when you shoot several thousand rounds at a session. Is there better ammo? Of course, but this is the best for my application that I have run across. I just bought another 10 cases (I think they are 7350 round cases or some such) of the stuff just in case they stop making the bulk pack packaging. |

Nothing overly new in this reply - 10/22 carbine, Browning Buckmark pistol and a S&W M18 Combat Masterpiece DA/SA revolver. All of them bought on "I need a .22" whims, wouldn't dream of parting with any of them. The Buckmark used to be fussy and would only be 100% reliable with CCI Mini-Mags. Now, all three are ammo whores - they'll take anything and love it. Still most accurate with the CCIs so that's primarily what I stock. Just landed a new job and I'm going to celebrate by getting an Outback II for both semis. |
Do NOT get the 10/22.... sure, its kinda normal looking at first..... but then you decide to get a new hammer.... then its a mag release..... next its a barrel..... yet it still hungers, starts begging for more, suddenly its wearing a new stock..... worse than crack... ![]() Actually, I love my 10/22. its my most fun gun, and yet still very practical for survival purposes. I once had a Browning Buckmark pistol, but sold it so I could eat. Now I am thinking I shoulda gone hungry. I sure miss my buckmark. My 10/22 prefers remington golden bullets, and CCI minimags. My buckmark liked federal. |

Being as this is the survival forum, I'd recommend a rifle that would be easiest to find parts for in case of a protracted event. The Ruger 10/22 is probably the most ubiquitous auto rifle today, followed by the Marlin 60. Handgun wise, it seems that most everyone has a Ruger Mk II. Besides being in nearly everyone's collection, these are excellent .22s by anyone's standard. And I've had great luck with the Fed bulk packs. Not really the most accurate, but will reliably cycle all my autoloaders. Remington, PMC, and American Eagle get a thumbs down because they were all too weak to cycle most of my guns. Winchester Xpert was the most accurate bulk pack, but a little on the weak side with some guns. It was no great task to shoot dime-sized 10-rd groups at 25 yards with this stuff. |
:D Ruger MKII/III. Browning Buckmark. |
Federal .22 sucks Get a 10/22 and some steel lipped 25 rounders and some golden bullet bulk packs from remington and have a blast. trust me buy a pack of remington and do a test and see what is more accurate. Then get some water jugs and do a test you will find out that the rem will frag. Also I have shot many birds with it they just drop dead. Also make sure you get the steel liped high cap mags i think its rock river. Dont get the plastic crap it just melts. also they make the 10/22 with a long barrel and stainless. |
|
Semi Rifle = Ruger 10-22 Lever Rifle = Marlin 39A Pistol = Rugar MarkII or MarkIII (any barrel config you like) Any of these will be enjoyed by your great grandchildren if taken care of. (translated to "keep it dry and shoot it a lot" and "don't clean it every time you look at it") |
|
I've used at least 10 boxes of Federal .22 LR in the 550 round value packs in my Ruger MKII, with and without the silencer. The stuff works. I have other .22 LR ammo but the Federal is cheap and works good. You can't go wrong with a Ruger 10/22 or a Ruger MK series pistol. |

I love my Henry pump gun: it is just a lot of fun. I love my Ciener conversion kit: it eats anything I feed it, and lets me play with my AR at 2¢/round versus the arm, leg, and offspring I would have to trade for some 5.56 NATO. I loved my dad's S&W 617, and it is on my short-list of next-to-buy handguns. The Ruger MkII my dad had did not feed all that great -- it would choke on a round every three mags or so. However, may dad may have admitted to "polishing the feed ramps" or some other bit of garage-gunsmithing malarkey. The Sig Mosquito I own is... "tempermental", to say the least: short-strokes, failure-to-feeds, stove pipes -- I've tried a handfull of different ammo and both of the springs supplied by Sig. But I prolly have less than 300 rounds through it, and it seems to be getting better with use. I bought it 'cause it kinda had the same controls as my Beretta Px4, and later found out the Mosquito has/had a spotty reputation. YMMV. Oh, and there is always the cheapo used .22 bolt gun, often available for $50-75. -WhyTanFox |

Nothing against the 10/22, but my favorite .22 is a Marlin Model 24N (now available as the 924). It is a bolt-action, detachabl box-magazine fed rifle. I had mine threaded for my Gemteck Outback suppressor. I can mount the suppressor on it, and with subsonic ammo it is ridiculously quiet. A real advantage in all sorts of situations. No semi-auto will ever get as quiet. It is also quite accurate. ETA: Also, a bolt gun will work fine with ANY ammo, including .22 shorts. You avoid all the " my gun doesn't like X ammo" issues entirely. |
|
I'll echo Ruger 10/22. Slow fire, fast fire, accessories out the ass, light, accurate, durable, cheap, reliable, never have to clean them, there are more reasons but that's enough. If you're getting a can, think about a bolt gun but my Ruger is super quiet with subsonics and a can when I hook my offsite thumb over the bolt so it doesn't cycle (I shoot rifles lefty). |
|
incase anybody didn't say it----wait for it-------wait for it-------get a 10/22 and whoever is the guy getting blasted for the post that fed. 22 ammo sucks---thanks for the heads up-----I will have to try it for myself but it is a helpful thing to know before going out and buying 20 boxes of it |
