| My 16 year old sister is leaving on a missions trip to Honduras in a few days and so far what I have seen packed looks pretty basic for such a trip. This trip is going to be two weeks long, so given the duration and location, what would you recommend she bring? |
YES...and a small survival pack...people think you can't die of hypothermia and/or exposure in tropical enviroments but it is very possible. Heat sheet space blanket 2 bic lighters, petroleum jelly cotton balls, Doan magnesium firestarter Good poncho that can be used as shelter as well(I love my big olive drab one with grommets about every 2 feet around it) 50 feet of parachord 1 liter wide mouth water bottle 1 small handheld yet power flashlight 2-3 photon freedom lights(1 green, 1 red, 1 white is what I like...when I am in the boonies I keep one around my neck at all times, one on my bag's zipper pull and one in my kit.) energy/meal replacement bars eta: whistle(in a tropical enviroment something loud that carries could be invaluable) ...and she should buy a decent knife as soon as she gets there. All of that should fit into a waist pack or small shoulder bag. |

Get her some copies of her passport and visa (just put a xerox copy of each in each bag and carry-on). Get her a money belt, Kavu bag, or similar and tell her to keep her passport and return tickets in it AT ALL TIMES. Make sure she's had all her vaccinations (Hep A & B, Typhoid, Tetanus, and I think Yellow Fever as bare minimum; Polio and Meningitis may be a good idea) and has her antimalarials if they need them. A course of levaquin is nice to have, as is Imodium. The Imodium is for necessary traveling, like the plane ride home, not for diarrhea during the non-travel phases of her trip. Benadryl for allergies, and something for travel/air/sea sickness if she has trouble. Something like sudafed if she's like me and has sinus congestion every frickin' time she flies home. Some bubblegum to help with equalizing ears during flights and bus rides. If she'll be in a developed area she should be ok to buy bottled water. A bottle or two of iodine tabs is still a good idea in case the bottled water is nonexistent or questionable. A couple of Power bars, Marathon bars, etc. ought to go into her carry-on or fanny pack. Sometimes safe food is hard to come by on mission trips, and there's always a hungry kid along the road who will appreciate a bar. ETA: Feel free to IM me or have her IM if I can be of any help answering specifics. I go out on medical missions to east Africa every summer, so I've done what she's about to do a few times. |
