So, funny thing. We've had two "pet" pygmy goats for about 6 years. Our little female goat has always been huge, the male is fixed. (We didn't have time to mess with offspring!). Anyway, our farrier (who's been raising and selling meat goats as a hobby the last couple years) is over yesterday and says, "have you ever milked her?" This female goat has never been around other male goats, just our "fixed" male. We reply no, but apparently, our female goat has some wierd defect where she continually produces milk, year round. Sure enough, my wife milked her this morning, probably a full quart in one milking. (This from a goat who's back is perhaps 18" tall). Now we're getting ready to experiment with the milk, cheese and butter being the first experiments. Not sure how we got a "magic goat" that is always producing milk without kids. Our farrier said dairies would pay a fair bit of coin to have an animal that is always fresh, but I think it's a nice little addition to our little farm. Just thought I'd share... I'll post with pics when we do something cool with the milk. |

didnt think goats would produce milk unless they were weaning?? suprising.. I had a small herd..60 nubians. untill 2 years ago in colorado sold milk to local dairyman..6 bucks a gallon.. It will freeze, and return to normal when defrosted un-like cow milk the cheese, when cured right is great.. butter???wouldnt do it..be some STRONG STUFF I could use it in coffee and stand it on cereal with sweetner.I dont use sugar.. my kids,,couldnt tell the difference as long as it was cold.. all of them were lactose intolorant so any milk that didnt sour thier digestives was a bonus! and they could drink a gallon each about every 3 days... one nubian produced about a gallon of milk daily. 60 was alot of milking the wife and I would spend about 3 hours a night milking goats by hand |
