I got into the area Friday around 8 am. Crossed over Shavers mountain and as soon as I turned onto the Glady road, I saw this on the mountain.

Temp dropped to 35* as I drove back into the area.  Found a pretty secluded spot. Built a fire ring, cut some wood, ect.

Sam ran ahead and checked for mines.

Couple of camp fire pics.

Clear skies at night, got pretty cold, coffee froze in the pot Glad I took my 0* bag as I'm pretty sure the 30* one would have been wanting.

Got to use my winch after LRT found out that his plow frame really messed up his approach angle.

Is that one of the tarp tents brand tents?

What gear did you use?

How many people ended up showing up? I wish I could have made it :(

Hey,

Just found this thread!

I am trying to download my photos on snap fish but it is acting up, I had a good time even with just Waldo and I being the only ones to show up. Sam was a great dog in camp and found out he loves my campfire hot dogs.

Waldo selected an excellent area for the hootches and the weather was very cold at night but warm and sunny during the day to the point where we were in Tee shirts but at night it was well below freezing.

Yes, it's a tarptent. I use it all the time (except if it's snowing).  Gear was just my normal stuff that I've been using for years with the exception of the new GPS.

The 60 CSx with the SiRF worked so much better in the valleys than the old etrex.

It got lock on seven- eight satellites in an area that the etrex had problems getting the three that are required for a fix.

Almost forgot about the exploding rock in the fire ring the first night.

I know better than to pick river rock for a fire ring and gathered them from the hill side, but I'm guessing that just  having been wet all winter one of them had soaked up a good amount of moisture.  BOOM  We were sitting there kind of stunned for a second going WTF?

ETA, the Mountain House chili mac did in LRT in the same way it did to me when I tried it last year. Don't think either of us will be buying any more of it.

I took you close to that place, but I don't recall if I took you into the exact same spot. I'm sure you were within 1/2 mile of the camp site though.

I was reading up on some of the wildernesses in VA that a friend and I are planning on going camping in and read that vehicles are prohibited in most wildernesses.

I looked up the one ya'll were at and it said the same thing, did the website have incorrect info?

Actual "wilderness areas" like Otter Creek and the Cranberry have no vehicle access of any type. This place is different, but still has a no off road policy. Having said that, there are places that you can get stuck.
