I realy don't see myself leaving for the short term. What are in your stay at home preps. |
everything needed for the long term? i'd go with water, food, more water, and more food. add some hygeine, first aid, santitaion, communication, and entertainment supplies/equipment, top it off with more food and water. oh, yeah, and some guns. ammo for the guns would be good to have too. ar-jedi |

It's really plural BINS, unless it's big, heavy and has only enough water for 2-3 days. Otherwise, get 20 gallons of water or more (those 5 or 10 gallon dispensers), breakfast meals (cereal and powdered milk, oatmeal, canned fruit, trail mix, bisquick), snack foods, lunch and dinner foods (MREs, mountain house, crackers, canned meats, soups, etc. flour, rice, sugar, etc. and keep all the food separated from the water. Get another bin for batteries, flashlights, candles, matches, lighters... Another for medicine stuff, first aid, extra clothes, hygene things. etc. |

For myself and immediate family bugging out is not an option, extended family would bug out to our place. Our in place preps for bugging in for the duration: Water: 6gpm Well w/500 gallon holding tank Food: 6,500 lbs long term storage foods (beans, rice, cornmeal, pasta, salt, sugar and other goods that keep) Power: Honda 2000I (2KW Inverter, very quiet) Heat: Large wood stove for main house (current primary heat source) Light: Multiple Aladdin mantle lamps Cooking and Hot Water: Propane range (non-electric) Fuel: 5 acres of heavily wooded land I've only touched on the major points that we have worked out over the last three years since buying the property. There is still much left to do and more to store. Fortunately after all the severe weather and power outages shortly after moving in, and the adjustment to the rural life, my wife sees the the light and has actively been participating in the storage and preparation mentality. She also has no problem dispatching critters with a rifle or shotgun that are trying to eat our chickens on her own c0 98% of the population is asleep. The other 2% are staring around in complete amazement, abject terror, or both. falloutshelter653.org |

I would look at adding a secondary propane tank with a tee on it. That way no matter what the level of your primary tank you always have 500 or 1000 backup. Most propane companies will rent you a 2nd tank much cheaper than your primary and since its a one time fill that never goes bad its only the initial cost that hurts. Whit |

Sighted-in and tested all firearms and sights Constructed a shoulder strap and carry handle for 12 volt deep cycle battery. Re-checked all radiation detection equipment. Transfered certain items into water proof sea bags and place them into the duffles. Keep all rechargable batteries topped off and log charging dates. Espaecially for corless tools. Sharpened all knives and tomahawk. Tested all electronic gear for proper operation and logged date(s). then removed batteries. Periodically unpack and inspect all gear and supplies for condition and to familiarize locations in packs. Test generater set and log date. Test Petromax multifuel lantern and log date. Test 10 watt solar panel and voltage controller output and battery state of charge. Log date and condition. Test all radios and remove batteries. I constantly re-arrange the equipment to and place items into groups for easy access in darkess and under periods of high stress. I marked my packs with lettering indicating priority if I have to leave my location fast. I inspect all gas cylinders for leakage and log condition and date. Tested PUR desalinator, change out biocide, log condition and date. Check all lighting (flashlights), remove batteries and store with them. Never store batteries in flashlights. It's so important to check over your gear every now and then to inspect it's condition and familiarize yourself with it's operation. Can't stress this enough. If something can get ruined by water then bag it! What if you have to drag a duffle through water and rain? Pick up spare stuff for everything like gun parts, spare hard to get button batteries, bulbs, filters, small parts that can get lost or broken during repairs and maintenance. Break in your footgear like those new hiking boots. Get some Moleskin and powder. |
But how can you go broke when you work at it steady week by week over the course of 5 years like I did. If I had to start over again it would cost me more due to inflation, higher demand and laws are changing over the next five years. Some of the deals I got on the longterm food were sick and will never be seen again. Ammo was cheap 5 years ago and you could always get what you wanted when you wanted. Times are rapidly changing. You can't even get a Petromax stove anymore unless you fly to Europe. I still have $1.25 gallon gas stored. There are still tons of things I'd like to get but can't afford Go figure, huh. But I keep at it. I also sell all my worthless toys like my Chevelle SS to buy gold and silver. The price goes up and I sell metal at a profit to buy preps. I'd rather have gold than Detroit Rat iron at this point in time. I don't spend money on worthless shit and don't piss my paycheck away in a titty bar. Some may say I have no life, but at some point I will when everyone else won't. I have some brand new performance parts in the closet I'm going to unload on Ebay and get some nice gear, food or gold...or whatever I set my priority for.Peace of mind: priceless! I have actually saved myself tons of money! |
No, it is really simple. For long term preps you start like this. for 2 weeks write down EVERYTHING you use. be it soap or underware or tools at work. do it again 2 weeks later. compare make on big list. THEN add what you THINK you'll need. wham theres a long term list. That is why it isnt about beans and bullets. Theres more to it. Yes you Bugged out,, but what happens when that fancy pair of boots you have fall apart? got a spare set ? it's mundane things we forget about, nail clippers, combs, tooth brush's... toilet plunger, spare repair parts for the house..that sorta crap! what i have done to stock the 3-4 Cache/BOL's i have is just buy here and there. If im at china mart and they have 2 fer 1 6 packof socks.. for 2$ i buy a few, i see some Tshorts on sale i buy 1-2. figure every store trip i go in with 5-20$ that i know ill drop on something for those AO's. I buy just becuase its cheap also. And im not snobby about it. Ive bought used clothing at thrift stores. Man you can pick up 2 weeks of shirts for under 15$ at times if you shop. Ive found complte BDU sets, with M65's fer under 12$,, tools, parts etc! be cheap buy cheap, make that $$ last longer. that 1.50$ shirt from that thrift store,, you wshed and packed away will be welcome once the one on your back falls apart or stinks bad! |

Yeah, what he said ![]() BTW, nice list Protus! c0 98% of the population is asleep. The other 2% are staring around in complete amazement, abject terror, or both. falloutshelter653.org |
only part of the list is mine. I posted that list here, it died after 3 post( no surprise really). The other list were from another board where it got a bunch more replys and list add'd to it. Those were just the larger list on top of mine. so i cant take full credit. |
Protus You can still take credit for being a distinquished "Prep Master". I share your phylosophy of how to go about determining what you will need, such as items that will wear out or require maintenance parts and the little every day things in life that are overlooked by most. Your two week lists are an excellent tool for others, being nebies, or advanced alike. Right on brother, you get it! |

On the same note, the wife and myself just got done moving our long term food stores from one part of the property to another in preparation for a new 25'X30' steel building that is going to be put in. I guess that you don't realize how much has been accumulated until you have to move it! The stores that were moved were all a gift from a good friend a while back, at the time he only transferred about 5% of his total preps to our family.. With the subtraction of what we have already used (learning to live of the stored preps), here is what was left... Four full pallets of buckets stacked four high. When moving them I was able to get an accurate inventory of the amounts. 1 Barley, Pearl (25lb) 1 Beans, Kidney (15lb) 1 Beans, Northern White (25lb) 10 Beans, Pinto (25lb) 4 Cocoa (200 bags) 12 Coffee (12lb) 27 Cornmeal (25lb) 1 Flour, Wheat (25lb) 8 Flour, White (25lb) 1 Lentils (25lb) 8 Molassas 1gal* 13 Oats, Rolled (oatmeal) (25lb) 6 Oil, Olive 1gal* 4 Oil, Salad 5gal* 3 Pasta, Egg Noodles (15lb) 7 Pasta, Elbow Macaroni (15lb) 2 Pasta, Long Medium (15lb) 3 Pasta, Long Thin (15lb) 1 Pasta, Long Tube (10lb) 12 Pasta, Small Shell (15lb) 9 Pasta, Spiral (10lb) 1 Peas, Green (25lb) 1 Powdered Eggs (25lb) 6 Powdered Milk (25lb) 1 Powdered Orange Drink (25lb) 1 Powdered Peanut Butter (25lb) 2 Powdered Shortening (25lb) 21 Rice, white (33lb) 4 Salt, Iodized (50lb) 3 Sugar, Brown (33lb) 14 Sugar, White (33lb) 52 Wheat, Hard Red (25lb) The number in front denotes the number of 5 gallon buckets sealed with a mylar bags and oxy absorbers inside. * denotes items that are not in 5 gallon buckets. The grand total for just the long term storage is 217 buckets weighing in at approx 5,520lbs (including non bucketed items in the list). The real drag is that I am going to have to move it all again when the new building is put up Protus: I saved the list that you compiled, it has a lot of the items that are easily overlooked (and the most wanted if TSHTF were to come about... What was it that was said about "the simple things in life"...) c0 98% of the population is asleep. The other 2% are staring around in complete amazement, abject terror, or both. falloutshelter653.org |
Right now its just me, my wife and the critters, but we keep enough on hand for the immediate family as well. From what I remember of the recommendations on the LDS site, we have almost enough on had to keep six going for a year or more. Besides this we still have our pantry which easily holds enough to keep us going for 6+ months on its own ![]() c0 98% of the population is asleep. Protus, during the hurricanes you've been through, what items did you use more, and did you find a use for your water purifier then? Also, I just grabbed a PUR Hiker that filters down to 0.3 microns. Will that eliminate bacteria in the water typical to FL canals and water retention ponds or should I look at some other option for long term potable water? Thanks, Writer
