Why dont more people carry a bit of steel wool when camping or in the GHB even BOB?

I think that it with a pair of batteries you borrow from your flash light
is the quickest way to start a fire!!

Wow I have heard it for years but just did it the first time the other day..

Its not that heavy and doesnt take much space at all...
Im sure there are other uses for it as well.

Check. A 9V works real good. I spray WD40 on the wool before storage. It also helps it flame up easy and prevents rust damage.

Yep I carry 000 and 0000 steel wool in 35mm film containers.  I carry 2 9v batteries in 35mm film containers also.

How does it work and and how much steel wool does it take?

Take the steel wool from the film canister(35mm).  Expand it a little.  Touch the contacts from the 9 volt battery to the steel wool.  The wool will glow red and then start to burn.  Ideally you would place the steel wool in your fire pit and place tender and kindling over it.  For safetys sake test this outside in an open place.  Metal fires on carpeting = call to fire department.

You can also store a small amount stuffed inside the spring on the endcap of most flashlights, especially D cells.

If you are sharpening a lawn mower blade in your garage with a grinder make sure there is not steel wool around for sparks to get in.

I'm just sayin'
