Well not really weightlifting.....has anyone considered storing up protein powder as part of the SHTF food storage? The mix I use is Muscle Milk.  It is really good just with water and shockingly good with milk.   One 2.45lb bottle has 15 days worth of one serving a day.  I think you could mix it with powdered milk to get a good bit of calories and protein to suppliment the normal storage items.

It comes in many flavors.  I prefer the Cookies and Creme, Peanut Butter, and Vanilla.  It is pricey locally, but can be had online for around 17 dollars a tub from several places.  It is "best by" a year from purchase.  I think it would last longer.  Anyways let me know what you think.

I use something similar...some chocolate protein shake.  Despite its...chunkiness and total lack of desire to actually blend with milk, it doesn't taste bad.  My problem, $12 for 30 servings.  It seems rather steep to me for a liquid.  Even drinking that, if you still feel hungry (despite how much energy you have) your morale will drop and the thought of solid food will occupy your mind.  If protein is a concern along with storage life, look no further than peanut butter as far as I'm concerned.  Packed with protein, fat, calories, and a couple spoon fulls will sit in your stomach like a brick slowly dissolving and keeping you full for awhile.  Personally, every ounce of clean drinkable water will remain exactly that...water.  YMMV.

How about some mass-gain shake mix.  That stuff has like 2600 calories and like 300% of your daily vitamins and minerals.

I know there is alot of unknown surrounding these products.  One is the effects of stopping use of the products.  I would hate to find out what happens when you stop using it when SHTF and you run out of your "juice".
Seems like hard work would be a more healthy approach.

I don't know if he is asking about this pertaining to using it to build muscle after the SHTF, instead it seems as though he is asking about it in regards to a food prep.  For a food prep, as stated before, I give it a thumbs down.  As far as building muscle after SHTF, when every last thing you do is work, I don't think people would have a problem with that.  It will end up becoming survival of the fittest.  That includes physical and if you can't handle the pain of strenuous physical work, you may not be very successful, especially if things went long term and you were forced to build your own long term shelter and live off the land by farming, hunting and fishing.

You'd be pissing away the excess 200% B & C vitamins, or going toxic on the excess 200% of fat-soluble A, D, E, & K vitmains; 2600 calories might be potentially useful in a SHTF environment, but it has been shown that the chewing is fundamentally important for complete nutrient uptake, compared to, say an IV feed.  That is to say, the physical act of chewing stimulates the digestive response.  Sounds odd, but it's true.

Optimum Nutritions products are just as good quality wise (Muscle milk tastes better) and less expensive.  You can buy in bulk at www.buknutrition.com  I have considered the same thing.  Also considered Optimum Nutritions serious mass weight gainer for the BOB.  It is more filling than you would think and packed with calories.  FOr complex carbs you can add Gerber baby rice.  You cannt even taste it and its a great source of carbs.

ETA ON 100% whey protien has 22grams of protien per scoop.  10lbs from bulknutrition runs about $50.  I know several competetive bodybuilders that swear there is nothing better for the $$$.

Muscle milk really does taste good though

You make it sound like an anabolic steriod, that ouldn't be farther from the truth.  Its Whey protien derived from milk.  Its simply a fast way to get quick absorbing protien.  Your body goes into a catabolic state if its deprived of prtien for more than 4 hours.  Protien shakes are used to supplement the whole foods you injest over the course of a day.  FOr a guy like me for instance, who needs approxametly 7000caleries a day to gain weight and 5500 to sustain a dietary supplement like this is awsome.  Each scoop contains 20grms of protien.  An average chicken breast has 20 grams of protien for comparison.  Iwouldnt consider stocking up on it as my only food source but its a great supplement when your food stores are limited.  YOu could make your whole food last much longer by replacing a meal or two with a shake.  Or eating a half meal to keep from being hungry and supplement that with a shake.

Again  think weight gainers would be great for the BOB.  I used them when I was road marching a lot just to get my caloric intake up without gorging myself.

BTW "juice" is slang for anabolic steriods, more specificly those derived from Testosterone.  This is not "juice" its protien, there is a difference

Thanks for the replies guys.  I was just throwing out the idea of storing up some protein powder suppliments in addition to my usual food preps.  I work out and run alot, and find protein suppliments essential in recovery.  That being said, my thinking is when else are you going to need fast recovery than in a high stress SHTF environment.

Hope that clears up what I was asking opinions on.

Thanks for the links to some more inexpensive items!

Muscle Milk is quite good and there are no ill effects from stopping it's use. I consumed a great deal of it on my third trip to the sanbox. It gets an IPSC_GUY thumbs up. Try the little packets to see what flavor you like. Strawberry milkshake tastes exactly like it's name.
