New into the sport and wanted a rod that had a dual purpose  the description basically summed up what I wanted , just wanted to see if people had any thoughts.

Clearwater 8-weight 9' Fly Rod

If you had to buy one highly capable, yet extremely affordable, big-game rod to cover saltwater, salmon, and steelhead, the Clearwater 908-4 would be your best bet.

I have 8 wt. switch rod(single hand or spey cast), 6wt. single hand, Salmon/Steelhead casting and a S/S spinning rods. All were made by Cliff Smart at NWBigfin.com. He custom makes them to your spec and keeps the price extremely reasonable.

What type of fish are you going after?

8wt is probably overkill for most fish (trout, panfish, etc.) And will likely not present as delicately as a nice 4 or 5 wt stick resulting in tired arms and spooked fish.

I would look for a local fly shop or even a Cabela's or Bass Pro and get hands on advice from someone.

I have a Winston VSL 4wt and a Winston Passport 6wt and love them both FWIW.

I have a St Croix Rio Santo 5Wt with a 7/8 Weight Okuma SLV Reel on it.  That's my everything setup, use it easily for panfish and stream trout, and the reel has enough line and smooth enough drag to work on Medium Steelhead and smaller salmon.  Casts land handles like a dream.

Right. It'll work but not be as good/fun. I use my 8-wt TFO BVK all the time on panfish but it's just because I haven't picked up a 5 yet. I mostly got it for saltwater (reds, spotted trout, etc).

I have the Okuma SLV 7/8 and it's a nice reel. Might look at a Lamson also. Sage also has some nice lower-priced reels.

I have a 5wt for trout  in my area ... but I have family down by Tampa and since I go down a few times a year I thought I could go after some snook or redfish   , the one I posted in the link I thought could be a decent balance in the event I wanted to use it for more then just saltwater.  Main reason im going after Orvis is that I have a gift certificate that I wanted to use.
