i picked up a crossbow last season. i used to bow hunt but hurt my wrist and have had it worked on 6 times in the past 3 years. after my last sugery i cant get the string back. i was looking around at the ones with the cocking handles. do they work pretty good? from what it looks like you just turn the handle and the string comes back. i want to be able to hunt but with my wrist there is no way i can bow hunt or load the crossbow with out help. any advice on crossbows? i am thinking of trading a gun for a better crossbow then the one i picked up.

I've used the Tenpoint and the Horton cranks.  Both make the task considerably easier, but they are also a bit bulky.

Horton makes a contraption that is pretty much a rope with a pulley and a hook to grab the string that works pretty slick.  You would still have to be able to pull some of the weight though.

All in all, pretty much everything that I've tried was at the very least a little bit of a PITA.

Cranking mechs work and make cocknig crossbows pretty easy. With that said alot of them ratchet and make a clicking noise and they take some time to crank to full draw..ie you have to crank it a bunch of times.  I'd use a rope cocker if you can, they are virtually silent and very quick to use.

Be sure to check your state laws before hunting with a cocking device on your crossbow.

I use a rope cocker on my Excalibur.  Surprisingly easy.

have a rope cocker on my Stryker cross bow. Its a 165lb draw so even with the rope cocker it takes a little effort.

I know Parker just came out with a new crossbow that is self cocking. It uses a small paintgun CO2 tank to provide pressure to a cyclinder that cocks the bow. I think they are a bit spendy but they look fairly compact and functional. From what I understand they are supposedly pretty quiet too. At least compared to the ratcheting kind. Might be worth checking out.
