Times are a little tough right now.  Would a bale of hay on end stop a 300 fps crossbow bolt without ruining the fletching?

Call your local TSC, Lowe's, and Home Depot and ask them if they give away those styrofoam blocks that they use for shipping trailers to their stores.  Some places give them away, some send them back.  It just depends on the store manager.

They work good for field points or broadheads, and you can't beat the price.

I appreciate the replies.  Will get some Styrofoam.

If you get those blocks, you can duct tape 4 (or however many you want) together to make a large backstop.  I know some people get them and make a "wall" of them behind their 3D targets, in case of a miss.

round bales, probably yes (I shoot 242 fps BH's into them all the time)

square bales, probably not.
