I'd like to carry one of my full frame pistols when hiking. I'm trying to find a backpack (daypack) with a compartment where I can just reach back and easily get to my pistol without too much effort.

Does anyone have any suggestions from personal experience?

haven't used them, but 5.11 has a lot of them.  Rather pricey though.

Drago has a pretty good backpack for around 40 to 50 dollars. I know an officer who's pretty happy with his. He got it at Lou's Police Supply.

I have a Camelbak Urban Assault and I really like it. It has MOLLE webbing on an interior pouch and several concealment holsters built in it as well as a document organizer and a hydration pack. Also you can get it in black, red, or blue; so it doesn't scream tactical to the sheepole.

I'm not sure if it's still restricted to LE though. Hafta check on that one. Botach Tactical was where I got mine and they had the best prices.

I just bought a Maxpedition and I am now a fan.  I am sure they will have something you will like and the quality is great.

Here's how I carry my G20SF, but I guess that's not an option for Floridians.

camelback used to have one but they discontinued it. it was called the demon pack but like I said it was discontinued. had a small pouch on the bottom that had space for one pistol and a mag or two

Can you show how you have that attached to the kidney strap of the pack?

The M12 in the picture uses Bianchi's Quick-lock system.  The pack has an equipment loop on the right side.

I recently saw this on another board:

Ribz Wear

It's an additional storage option that sits in front of your body.  They had a discount code for 50% off ($30 after discount) so I bought one; code : ribzilla

It large enough for a full size pistol and has a horizontal zipper for easy access and they can be unzipped with 1 hand.  Can be used for right or left handers.  And the best part it looks like regular outdoor gear so you don't scare the hippies.

ETA ****  I haven't tried this in the field yet

Kifaru has a special pouch for CCW/ Weapons while in field.    I found the link http://store.kifaru.net/koala-800ci131-liters-p54.aspx

And wouldn't the SafePacker from TheWilderness work as well..

Most Maxpedition packs have CCW compartments with holsters.  I carried a  Monsoon(I think) every day to work and had to draw from it a couple times in some of the shady allies, and it worked like a charm.  Not to mention my office didn't allow guns and no one noticed anything unusual about the bag or compartment.

I don't know if a single strap backpack is what you are looking for but Elite Survival offers a good option:

The Hill People Gear Kit bag is awesome.  I've used it many times on anything from a day hike to a multi-day outing and you forget you even have it on.  Its also really convenient to have all your most important tools right on your chest along with you ccw.

I bought the Tactical Tailor Luna pouch and it's ok. I carried a G19 in it and I actually think it's too big. However the next size smaller was too small for the G19. Here's the link:

Well made, not too expensive, and comes in a couple color options.

It would be perfect for a G17 IMO.

It's a fanny pack for your chest.

I'm sure it's useful, but I can't stop laughing.

It's right there with you when you need it, even if you have to dump your pack, pack straps don't interfere for drawing, plenty of room for survival kit and other items...not much to laugh at.

I'll acknowledge its utility but it does look dopey.

I don't see much utility in trying to wrestle your gun out of that thing and punching a hole in your off-side bicep.

Ouch.

People say the same thing with chest holsters on a PC.  Its trigger discipline.  If your going to shoot yourself in the bicep, you'll shoot yourself in the foot or thigh with a standard hip holster.

I just use a leather fanny pack. In Florida no one has even thought it was anything else. Even sitting in a car it is easily accessible.

You can say it's dopey looking all you want but its quick and doesn't get in the way at all.

To the guy worried about punching a hole in his bicep, if you're paranoid you can add a trigger scabbard.
