Hi all,
I need a new pair of boots and am looking for suggestions. Need something that is comfortable to walk in over long distances outdoors, waterproof, and good for both cold & hot weather (if possible). Basically good for hiking/hunting. I had a pair of Wolverines but lost them. They were good but not designed for walking long distances, hurt my feet after a while. I know there's a whole universe of boots, brands, styles, etc., could use some advice from any of the boot-gurus in here. Thanks, Jimmy |

I wore Vasque for a number of years, and they will probably be my next purchase. The problem is about 12 years ago I dropped 2 bills on a pair of Scarpas, and I'm having trouble wearing them out. The Scarpas have not been quite as comfortable as Vasque and they are heavy, but I don't regret buying them.
My wife wears Timberlines and is happy with them. Sorry I don't have any specific models for you to check out........But a nice boot is worth the money and I though the Vasque boots I owned were a good value. |

USA made Danners. The Fort Luwis, Acadia, Rain forest, are all models I have used and have been happy with. Comfert is the biggest thing for me. I can were them all day, come home and fall asleep with them on.
I have converted alot of people to Danner users over the years. |

My first good pair of boots was a pair of Herman Survivors...but that was 30 years ago, when they were still US made. I wouldn't have a pair of them now
if you gave them to me. I've also had great experiences with Danner, but by far the best boots I've ever owned are a pair of Vasque Sundowners. My wife also has a pair. They're solid leather with a GoreTex inner liner & Vibram-type, if not actually Vibram-made, sole. They're the most comfortable, best looking...heck, pick a superlative, & IMO, it'll probably be applicable to Sundowners. I also have two pair of nylon/leather/GoreTex Vasque boots, & they're very, very good...but not quite in the same category as the Sundowners. They're fairly expensive...and worth every penny. David |

How many of you buy your boots online? I'm also in the market for a good pair, but given the variance in sizes from one manufacturer to another, how have your online boot shopping experiences been? I've done it, but not before I have tried on that exact model and size in a retail store and walked around/jumped/whatever in them. I usually try on everything in store that remotely fits my endstate. I've been known to try something on at REI or (formerly) galyan's and then find the exact same thing later on Sierra Trading Post for 60% of the sticker price. This is common with Vasque and Asolo. STP will have for $130 (if they have your size) the same boot that was $200 at REI. Finding one "do all" boot is not going to be easy. The best compromise you are going to make is a gore tex lined, uninsulated shoe with a leather/nylon upper. I saw many recommendations for Danner- their USA made shoes are repairable, if that matters to you. The foreign made Danners are still or decent quality. Many folks recommend Merrills- they are very comfortable, but are a disposable shoe at that build and price. The "Moab" model is very popular and I like the fit, but did not buy due to the number I have seen shredded. This happened to my girlfriend on her first outing with them. Merrill did replace the shoes for the cost of shipping. |
| I wear Matterhorn ATD . I love em. My feet are always cold, not with these boots on though. They are 10" plus tall , which I really like. They stopped a snake strike last year. Turned out to be a common black snake that I didnt see, but could have easily been a rattler. |

Rat snakes teeth are very small, recurved and very easily damaged. A mouse has bigger teeth capable of more damage. Danners I buy all my boots online nowadays. I know the size I wear from experiance with the brand. If I didnt, I would go to a store that carryed the model I was interested in, and try them on. I have not payed retail for Danners in over 10 years. |

I used to swear by Irish Setters but the last pair I bought was made in China |

Well, I just picked up my first pair of Vasques at Hudson Trail Outfitters.
I've always been a bargain brand shopper, so I'm interested to see how these wear, long-term. They DO feel good. Thanks for the suggestions, guys. Also, the salesguy told me that I can get these re-soled at the factory for $40, if they ever need it. |
