So I’m going to try and build my own pair of snowshoes and right now I’m in the early stages of my research process. I’ve found a book called Building Snowshoes and Snowshoe Furniture by Gil Gilpatrick, which looks to be a very good source for this. However, I was wondering if anyone else has done this before and might have some advice, book suggestions, and/or websites that would be useful? -Thanks |

Down south, just about anything with a vibram sole can be used as a snowshoe. All joking aside, I presume you are looking to build some traditional ones using leather, hide, and wood. Really can't help you because in my meager 35 years of backcountry travel, I could have used snowshoes only once in the NC mountains. Does your book show what the pivoting claw is made of, if not metal? Good luck, RS |

Here are some kits I've been thinking about giving my kids as presents: snowshoe.com/index.cfm?pageid=284&productid=700#700 |
No, it doesn't show any claws at all. I'm trying to think of a way to make one.hinking.gif Thanks eb for the link! |
