So I’m going to try and build my own pair of snowshoes and right now I’m in the early stages of my research process.  I’ve found a book called Building Snowshoes and Snowshoe Furniture by Gil Gilpatrick, which looks to be a very good source for this.  However, I was wondering if anyone else has done this before and might have some advice, book suggestions, and/or websites that would be useful?

-Thanks

Down south, just about anything with a vibram sole can be used as a snowshoe. All joking aside, I presume you are looking to build some traditional ones using leather, hide, and wood. Really can't help you because in my meager 35 years of backcountry travel, I could have used snowshoes only once in the NC mountains. Does your book show what the pivoting claw is made of, if not metal?

Good luck,
RS

Here are some kits I've been thinking about giving my kids as presents:

No, it doesn't show any claws at all.  I'm trying to think of a way to make one.hinking.gif
