Anyone want to share where you've been able to purchase good maps that include elevation, rr tracks, powerlines, and dirt roads?  I've been searching around the net and haven't been able to come up with any such thing for my new area of operation.
The only source I've found so far is Cabelas and the USGS.

I believe the most detailed maps you will find will be the USGS maps.  Hate to say it, but I haven't used an actual map and compass for any length since Boy Scouts, but we always used USGS maps.

If you have the time and are inclined you could use a USGS map and also a satalite overview of the area to se if there are any dirt roads that may have appeared since the last USGS survey.

Sorry I can't be more help, hopefully someone will chime in and help you out.

I have these maps for NY and VA, similar to usgs
www.maptech.com/

There is another brand name that I cannot remember.

I found some great national geographic maps of the adirondacks in a bike shop this weekend, not cheap at $ 10 a pop but easier to use than usgs. I think National Geographic also has cd maps. I would guess they are available here

good info on maps and related stuff

Watch out for satellite maps being dated. I found a satellite map that showed a dirt road in a field near my house, when I walked down it it was wall to wall McMansions.

Hell, around here anything more than 2 weeks old is outdated.  You can't spit without hitting a new "developement".

The fastest growing county in the US is in IL?

I thought it was usually a toss up between Maricopa (Phoenix) and Clark (Las Vegas).

Thanks for the info guys.  I intend to keep searching till I find what I'm looking for.  The overlay idea is a good one.  I wish I still had access to the GIS programs I used in college; I could simply make my own maps with everything I'm looking for.

To tell you thruth I believe we have lost that distinction, probably still in the top 10, but the county gov wants us to believe we are still #1.

Some counties have GIS maps available, but will probably cost you around $10(my county has them online, but the interface sucks).

Good luck.

If you have a specific are you want to map and have it set up the exact way you want the look no farther than this site! Great for dear leases, BIL/BOL and other similar locales

PS - If you play around with the site for a little bit you can have it create a map for you and 'demo' it for you on screen (takes a couple mins to generate). You arent going to print it out better than they can but if you just need a nice pic of an area for planning purposes then it works nicely.
