I just purchased a Remington 700 barreled action in 7mm Mag for a medium range hunting rig. Will be used on Black bear and whitetail, probably a max of 400 yards. Maybe a mule deer hunt if I'm lucky.
I am trying to keep the weight down on the entire rig, and was wondering what lightweight chassis systems are available? I'd like to keep cost down as well. So far I'm leaning towards the KRG X-ray, although the Magpul hunter's price is appealing. Any other suggestions? |

If you're going to hunt with it, get the Magpul or XLR Carbon. Chassis stocks are mostly pretty heavy, the Magpul is about a pound lighter than my LSS, the Carbon is a couple pounds less fully decked out. You'll hate humping anything extra up a mountain. The magpul felt good carrying up a hill (not mine, carried a buddies rifle for a while) and felt good on the shoulder. Heavier than factory by a ways. No sharp edges compared to an LSS chassis. Otherwise you're looking at a XLR Industries Carbon Chassis which is about 1000 bucks all in but it's sick light and would make a helluva good walking around stock compared to any of them that are carved out of solid aluminum if you want a chassis system to hike with. Nothing wrong with the X-ray AFAIK. Never held one long enough to form an opinion. Honestly, from experience. Leave it in the factory stock. It'll save you a couple pounds you don't want to have in your hands all day every day. |

The masterpiece arms lite chassis is solid very nice and weighs less than the krg x-ray.
the other benefit to it is that it is practically custom so they can customize it to your specs even if you want a feature that isn't offered (it may cost you extra). when I purchased s mpa chassis I had a few things done to it that weren't offered at the time. |

I only bought the barreled action, so no factory stock to run. It is just a basic Remington 700 barreled action so I'm not looking to spend a ton on the stock. $600ish is what I'm hoping for.
I did find a Mcmillan A2 that I had forgotten about lying around. I will try it with that first once the action gets in, but I have it feeling it'll be too heavy for my taste. |

If your barreled action is a long action then the KRG is not an option, and possibly the Magpul. They have the long action magpul stock and mags, but last I looked they are currently not available. If you can wait then I would go with Magpul, but if not I would without hesitation pick up an XLR Element chassis. These are light weight and very robust.
Personally these would be my two options for a hunting stock if I were not looking at a McMillan. |
| Just spoke with KRG. They do make the X-Ray in long action, however are CIP length unless I use a spacer. Rumor has it the Magpul Hunter long action will be ready come fall. I think I will wait till my barreled action comes in and decide from there. With my luck, I may spot something wrong and go another direction altogether. |

Patience is the virtue most consistently rewarded. This is true. Although I like the looks of the X-ray over the Hunter stock, for my application, it doesn't have a lot of advantages. I'm not going to be competing with this rifle or anything like that. What DOES make a difference is whether or not the hunter will be available in time for hunting season. Actually sooner than that because being able to gather a good dope with the rifle will help during the season. |
