I was wanting to try and obtain my grandfather's call sign. I looked at the FCC's page about Sequential Call Signs but was having issues fully grasping the grouping system and just what call signs fall under which group. My current understanding is that my group would have to be the same as my grandfather's group in order to request the call sign. Can anyone clarify this for me?
P.S. My grandfather's call sign was W5PKY |

Any of the currently available license classes (technician, general, extra) are eligible for that callsign (group C, IIRC).
There aren't any Group C callsigns left unissued in the typical call districts, so new technican or general licensees are getting Group D (2x3) format callsigns, but you can get a Group C callsign though the vanity program. Occasionally will raise an eyebrow, as long time amateurs tend to associate W and K 1x3s with general class licensees, and N 1x3s with technicians, but they are in the same group and available to the same licensees. |

Go here for instructions on obtaining a vanity call: You'll have to setup an FCC Registration Number (FRN) against your current call sign. Instructions here: |

I paid $39.95 to W5YI.org and they did all the paperwork and submitted the application to FCC. The whole process took several minutes of my time and it was worth it. My new license arrived several weeks later.

| I'm gonna try and request the call sign through the ULS. I had to setup my FRN security question and was told to wait to be contacted (36 business hours so I'm guessing Wednesday by the latest). I guess I will keep y'all informed on how that process is going. Thanks for the help. |
