just out of curiosity, were you guys trying to do contact with NVIS antennas? also kind of wondering if I'm reading these maps correctly. One map currently shows 2MHz as optimum freq, while the other shows 10MHz as MUF. Does that mean that there will probably be nothing bouncing off the F2 layer? |
i don't know what maineAR is using. on my end i have a G5RV up only about 20'. it seems effective mostly north/south for me; from NJ i can talk into florida and canada with ease, and as far west as ohio and michigan. all this on 5 or 10W (Icom 703+). i certainly need to get the antenna up higher, and of course band conditions outright suck right now.
i usually don't consult published propagation maps. as i let the rig warm up, i tune around to the WWV frequencies (2.5, 5, 10, 15, 20MHz), then the CHU frequencies (3.330, 7.335, 14.670MHz). if i can hear some or all of the time beacons (all via AM, btw) i sorta know which bands are "in business". there are some other beacons/etc which i have stored in my rig's memory -- i can tune those to see what's going on as well. also, it helps to have the ECARS (7.255Mhz) and MM (14.300MHz) net frequencies stored. if you can easily hear the NCS (net control stations) for those nets, that's a good sign. the MM net is up and running a good part of the day, and there is a modest amount of traffic so it's a useful reference to how the 20m band is doing. ar-jedi |
