Well modern gun season ended in my county on Monday and I didn't fill my tag so I'm already looking forward to muzzleloader season in December.  I have never owned one so need some suggestions on what to look for in a new smoke pole.  I prefer stainless with a synthetic stock and would like to keep it well under $300 and around $200 would be better.  What say the experts??

In that price range you might think about the CVA Optima or Kodiac. Both are nice mid priced BP rifles

I would agree, I have owned a CVA Optima for a couple of years. It is easy to clean (for a muzzleloader) and shoots pretty consistent.

Check your local craigslist or put up a wanted ad.  I got a ton of hits on my wanted ad, and ended up with a steal on a well-cared for Knight.

I have an Optima. I use 100 Grain worth of 777 pellets. It shoots nice and easy and is a snap to clean. I don't want to shoot a mag load with it. I've found I've never needed to either. It has more power than my 45-70 using Trail Boss.

for that price you can find a new or used Knight or T/C inline. Both are quality gun makers.

I have several.

I use a Thompson/ Center .50 Cal White Mountain Carbine for 90% of my deer hunting- most shots are under 50yrds and this a great gun for this. It is light, short barreled, good sights.... I use 75 gr powder and a 45cal sabot. Recoli is light with this load and unless you take bad shots, the deer drop in 20-30 yrds of the shot. Saw one at the pawn shop that I almost got the other day. they wanted $150 for it.
