ok so I am moved into my new apartment, and I have settled in enough to bust out the radio. (seemed like a nice night to stick an antenna out my 3rd story window)

I set everything up and flipped on the radio and soon after I get +20db of noise

switch power to battery to make sure its not coming from my power supply or wall, nothing.

the interference wiped out all of 20 meters, and I didn't try any other bands, because getting my antenna out is a royal PITA.

any ideas on what it might be? I'm less than a mile from where I used to live and never had any issues there so I'm thinking its very local.

ETA: the chirping in the beginning is the band sweeper sweeping the band, not the actual interference.

What Freq?

Could be cable, cell tower, WiFi.

I deal with Cable Interference (CLI).

Get a battery powered SW radio and go walking around with it on that same frequency to see where it is originating from.

Sounds like a plasma TV to me.

I had great luck using a MFJ 1026 noise cancelling device.  If the offending signal is close , the built in whip antenna will be sufficient for you to null plasma tv interference completely out.  I bought mine for $100 on QTH.com a while back.

After you switch something at about :40 it sounds exactly like something electrical, possibly from powerlines.  (I work for the Power Company and have to try to find it when someone complains)

You said battery, did you try shutting off all the breakers in your apartment while running on battery?  That will eliminate it from in your apartment, but honestly it could be anywhere in your apartment building and not much you can do about it if that is the case.  But if it is coming from outside the apartment, like the powerlines then you can complain to your local Electric Utility and they will at least have to investigate the problem.

Like the other comment, you can get a handheld battery operated radio, set it on an AM freq that is not being used and walk around to see if you pick up the "frying bacon" noise, that will be possible Powerline noise.  The AM antenna in the radio is directional so you can turn it around and see if the noise lessens as you point it in different directions.

Its probably a plasma tv then, no powerlines near me.
When the audio changes is when I turned the bandsweeper off.

Ill have to try again at a different time when hopefully the tv may be off, in the mean time maybe digital will still work. And hopefully ill make his tv flicker (jk.....maybe....)
