| I just thought some of you more tech savvy folks could use this information: How to Maintain Internet Access Given that there's talk of giving the President a "kill switch" for the internet in our country, this might be good to know. |
| it's only theoretical, there would need to be a lot of cooperation for it to work. One of the ideas is to manage dns and they would be hard pressed to control open dns. What about satellite links and cellular networks? Too much commerce today depends on the web. Banking, trading etc. i don't think there is much to worry about |

The administration could then control the info getting out. And pretty much say and do what it wanted. |

| Quite frankly, a 'kill switch' for the US won't work like it did in egypt. The internet was designed to be fault tolerant. Every piece that is cut off can work on it's own. If the 5ish major providers are actually talked into making a kill switch, each one of the providers underneath (lots) are basically little internets and will still work. There just isn't any decent way to cut it off in the US. It's like preparing for a global EMP - virtually impossible. |

If they DO turn it off for us, I'm thinkin' it will be FO time. Yep, pretty much. it won't be a singular event...it would be coupled with numerous other existing executive orders, including but not limited to: seizing assets, martial law, suspending the Constitution, etc. They aren't just going shut off the internet, it's going to be the whole enchilada, if they ever did it. As has been said before, it wouldn't be time to bury rifles, it would be tie to dig them up. FYI, with 32 yrs in Telcom, I personally don't think this internet kill switch is a big worry. What they should be (are) doing is finding a way to isolate networks from incoming cyber attacks, and such. if anything, that is probably what is behind this "kill switch" story. national security. Shut it down, isolate the problem. Ask Iran about Stuxnet. hee hee hee.

We often joke about how a 6 pack of beer and american idol or some show keeps the masses entertained. What is the gov. going to do with all the folks who read sites like this, freepers, and hundreds of other sites if they kill the net? The gov would probably have a heart attack if they did it during election times and 90% of the population went out and voted because they were bored. The gov would not know what to do at town hall meetings and what not when everyone who is a local actually showed up because there was nothing to do on the net. All the kids who play video games will drive their parents nuts if they can't get online and play online video games against each other. I figure it could happen and have intentions of staying in touch with some folks in the sort of local area but overall I think a lot of bored and armed folks with nothing to do is not really what the government wants to deal with. Ham is my next step. Also need to read up on my aunt's hughes internet setup more, they can be made portable and the user can set them up. People in this country are used to being able to google for answers in seconds. All the people with smart phones might have a hissy fit if their smart phone suddenly got really dumb but the bills stayed at normal levels. Anyway, it could happen but I would hate to be the sucker that everyone pointed at saying, "he did it." |
