I am proficient in using the usgi cammenga, but I sold mine when I needed some quick cash a while back. Now I need to get one and am wondering what other options are as good as the cammenga. The only downside for me with the compass was its weight and bulkyness.

Thoughts?

I just bought a new Cammenga last week, which should be here tomorrow, if the Miami post offices are open.

Brand new 2010 USGI contract production 3h (tritium,) no lanyard, pouch, or packaging.  $44.95 + $5 s/h from a well regarded Ebayer.

I looked at the Bruntons and the Silvas, but some of the better ones are upwards of $30-$35-$55, so I went with the USGI model.

The Silva Ranger 15T types are pretty good, but they're up there in price.

Went with this guy

If you are looking to save money but still have functional..............Treknor T580

The Brunton 0SS and the Silva Polaris area about the same thing in the same price range.

I have a number of these inexpensive ones for various GHBs etc.  They work just fine.  After the MIL compass, a clear base will spoil you.

See my post in THIS THREAD regarding my research and decision among "Type 15" compasses.

Here's the short answer

I recently heard from someone who had gotten a DQY-1 or DQL-1 compass and was very happy with it.  I am kind of tempted to buy one to replace my old Keuffel and Esser Brunton.

Silva Guide for me.  It is both light and reliable.  It is also very rugged IMO (though I don't go smashing my compasses with hammers so YMMV.)  Also has a mirror which can be a multiple use item in a survival situation.

I have a couple other different Silva compasses and they have all been good to me.

Another type of compass I have been using a lot lately is the Bezard compass.  SOG is selling West German issue(BGS) ones on ebay for $30 each- they are calibrated in 6400 Mils and are very nice- easy to use.
