First Annual

Second Annual

Third Annual

It's Apple Harvest time in NY, my favorite time of year, and that means I will once again give away some memberships here in the survival forum.
There have been no changes to the rules, so read thru the past contests for the low down, and some entry pics so you see how it goes.
And once again, if anyone should beat Duggans 2011 record of 173", it means Gold instead of Bronze
I will let this run to the end of the month.
Good luck to anyone who jumps in to peel an apple for Grandpa

Its a shame i never post here. Gave it a shot anyway and much say it is a lot more in-depth then what meets the eye.

I forgot about doing this.

Not sure if I have time to beat my old record with grad school and work ... but it's possible.

Edit: Wanted to add some inspiration from 2011.  It makes my hands hurt to look at this picture.

At this overwhelming rate of entries, you could just post a picture of an apple and be in the top three

Thanks for putting this on again.  I'll go ahead and submit my modest entry, although it won't take much to beat me out.  I was way too conservative, leaving a wide ribbon winding up 46.5" long.  Just used my old Case pocketknife.

Staring out with a regular Gala

Went way too wide on the peel

Peel still broke right at the end, so I wasted a few inches for the contest.

In one piece

I guess its a good thing I went wide, almost broke this piece, so I figured I better show a close up, as it is (barely) hanging on.

Final measurement

Guess I'll throw my hat in.
Apple: Gala apple from a 3lb bag on sale.
Knife: Wusthof Trident.
Time: A long time, I did this while watching Army of Darkness (the original)

Before:

Peeled:

Measured in 10" pieces for easy math:

Total length: 257"

If I could straighten the really curvy pieces it might be more, but I should stop procrastinating and start writing the paper I have due Wednesday.

Damn, that's a long peel.

Even if you did use a dedicated kitchen utensil and violate the only real rule of the contest.

May have to overlook that particular shenanigan this time.

Last few hours.....
Anyone else?

I thought you meant tools for peeling apples or some kind of "as seen on TV" thing. The knife is sorta my all purpose knife since it stays sharp enough to not be ruined cutting paper/packing tape/the awful vacuum plastic packages things come in.

So! As I am floundering on my paper, I peeled another apple (this time watching Game of Thrones) with an x-acto knife.

Apple #2:

The long springy peel (these gala apples are delicious btw):

Measured in 10" strips again, aside from the end bits that broke when I tried to straighten them out:

Total length this time around: 286"

So now no need to ignore a rule, the different knife actually made it easier as the thinner strips from the razor blade let me turn the apple more without the peel wanting to twist on itself.

I dont know how i have missed this until now, but i figured i had to try.  Fuji Apple, a Beretta folder i had in my pcket (kinda dull):

This was actually the second apple i tried, the first broke about half way through. was derfinately a lot harder than it looked, and i am not overly patient.

Cut into 6" pieces, since thats the only tape/ruler i could find in my car:

Total: 50 1/2 inches.  I think i can do much better, and i still have one apple left so i might try.  But at least this way i'm in

Thank you,

loon

My entry for grandpa :
Honeycrisp,  Camillus pocket knife from my youth.
Enjoyed a nice start night.

Had a couple rings from the ends that separated,  the dog ate the other one.  Did not count them.

112" total.  Thanks fish, nice to get a break and perspective.

Sorry about the formatting,  phone stinks for that.

Hit the orchards this weekend, came home with 55 pounds of Macintosh, Empire, Granny Smith, Cortlands and Macouns
Two of my boys, my little girl in the middle, her best friend, and my better half.  Spectacular weather, and an awesome crop this year.
Gonna go back out in two weeks for some late season ripening varieties.

Anyway, total of five entries this year, all very much appreciated, and as far as I am concerned, all winners too.

The grand prize, and Gold to boot, for beating Duggans 2011 entry into the dirt, goes to An_Orphanage.  His 287" entry with a standard x-acto is truly remarkable.
Whole other league there.  Hope he does as well on the paper he was supposed to have been writing while he was peeling.  His other entry of 257" I was going to let slide in even though he used a kitchen knife, but hey, turns out apple peeling holds a much stronger allure than schoolwork.

In second place is goodorbit, submitting 112" with his Camillus pocket folder (made in NY, fuck be upon Andrew Cuomo)
I swear I think I have that exact same knife in a drawer somewhere.

Third place goes to Topper1, a previous contestant, past winner, and good sport who broke his 85" peel, and sat back down for another try for his 65" submission.
His Victorinox Swiss Army non-locking folder gets honorable mention for all-around versatility, befitting the Survival Forum.

Honorable mention goes to loon_138, his 50.5" from his Beretta locking folder and skeleton blade, and Chief1246, with 46.5" from his old Case locking folder, a fine old knife with tons of mileage and good memories, I'm sure.

Gentlemen, this annual trip down memory lane is for me an opportunity to communicate across time and memory with an amazing man, and connect with parts of my childhood that I cherish.

Thanks for playing along.

Anyway, I bought all of you memberships, new for An_Orphanage, goodorbit, and loon_138, renewals for Topper1 and Chief1246

See you guys in team.......

Fish223,

Thanks for sponsoring the contest again. The simplicity  makes it fun.

What are you going to make out of your #55 of apples? Will the kids help?

Enjoy the fall season and your family, Topper1

A small basket went to each kids teacher this morning, the rest will go into pies, cobblers, fresh applesauce and baked apples.
The smaller ones go into lunchboxes.

Damn straight the kids help.  We have a really cool peeling machine that they love to use.

That first load will be gone by the time we head out east for another day picking in two weeks.

Thanks a bunch fish!

Both for the membership and for putting on this wonderful contest.
As far as contests I've seen on arfcom, this is the best; it's simple, fun and if anything you can still eat the apple you peeled

(I did finish my paper and turned it in an hour ago, despite trying to find even more reasons to put it off until the deadline tomorrow)

Much appreciated, fish!

This is an awsome tribute that you put on and I'm glad to see that your kids are taking part as well.

I've got a lot of practicing to do if I'm going to top these pros next year...I better get to it!  Congrats guys!
