I just got my first rifle a bushmaster ak shorty. If i squeeze the handguard at all it makes a popping sound from the hanguard slipping where each half meets Is this how the handguards fit on ar's? Is there any way to make them fit tighter? Thanks for any info!!
i have several bushmasters, and all of them do that. i can't speak for other ars though. i never noticed it to be a problem, i think they're designed with some tolerance for heat to expand the handguard without damage. just my opinion. good choice on the shorty ak. fun gun.
As much as I would like to say that Bushy has a grand plan about the handguards and allowing for heat expandsion and such but in reality their handguards are just kinda cheap. I love Bushmasters, but they cut a corner here. Get some Colt M4 handguards and you will have a top notch setup.
Thanks for all the info I really appreciate it. I just shot my rifle this morning its awesome. I'l check out the price for new handguards but i'l probably just live with it for now. All the accessories really start adding up. I'd like to buy some more mags. This rifle kicks ass.
My suggestion is to ditch the plastic, and get a REAL handguard... the C-More Quadrail. Not only will it increase your accuracy, (as it free-floats your barrel) it'll allow you to easilly mount TONS of accessories. Bushmaster sell's them Here.
I have a BM Shorty with a Kurts A2 brake thats a total 16 inches! I dont have any problems with the Handguards! I was going to put M4 handguards on it, but it wont work with my Aimpoint ML2 and gooseneck set up! So I passed! I also have a BM HBAR 20 with no problems with handguards! Paratroopers somtimes TAPE the Handguards!!
I am also haveing this problem with my Complete M4 upper i just bought. The M4 handguards have this Tongue and Grove type thing where they fit together and towards the end of the barrel they dont want to fit together but back where the delta ring is they fit fine, If i take the guards off and hold them together they are the same way and mine also makes the Pop... That noise is the tongue and groove poping into place.
I dont know what kinda handguards they are butthey have a heat shields on both parts and they look to be made good but they fit like crap.
I might order the Fobus guards but im not sure becasue i dont know if its the gun or the guards.
The stock handguards that came with my Bush M4 fit perfectly, but the aftermarket M4 handguards I ordered from them don't fit as well. They fit tightly together, but near the sight base the whole unit can move up or down 1-2 cm.
Members here have helped me. I will help them and you.
My Dissipator's handguards are kind of loose, too. You can rotate them a bit in either direction, which I don't really care for. Haven't had occasion to remove them yet, but when I do, will try reversing them to see if they fit tighter.
I wonder if this is the same problem that I've had with an Armalite: The handguards fit tightly into the handguard cap, but the handguard cap itself shifts when torque is applied. Does this sound familiar?
