Looking to get into longer range shooting. 200-600 yards. Mostly 200-400. I have zero experience with scopes so forgive me if I sound naive. With my CompM4 my groups look like this. I know I know, 25 & 50 yards isnt much at all, but its all I have to go with in the winter. The first two pics are shots at 25 yards. Last is 7 shots are 50 yards. Id like an optic that can get me clear shots like pic 2 and 3 at 200-400 range.

3 shots at 25 yards

2 shots at 25 yards (don't mind the top two. Was adjusting)

7 shots at 50 yards

Do I need to spend $500 + on scope, or can I get something like this?

I think Nikon is great mid range glass.  Some of their higher end stuff was on par with Leupy (Monarch Tac line).
Of course this is all subjective - I have a S&B that will always be better than me and a Leupy Mk8 1-8 on the way.
I have recommended Nikon to my hunting friends with excellent results.
Natchez usually runs great deal on Nikon refurbs.  If your .mil, LE or emergency services, you can find great deals on Promotive as well.

I'm an idiot and still can't hotlink

SWFA has their Super Sniper series that are pretty cheap ($300 +/- last year), unless you get the HD version as those go up to $8-900. I have a Straight 10X Fixed Power Mildot (LT-104 mount) on my M-1A and it is crystal clear at 500 yards with plenty of magnificaion to go further.... This link is actually to the side focus which is $400, the rear focus is still $300. They also have a 6 power unit for $300

Oh, and just make sure you order the Lt 104 to ensure accuracy!

I really like the Vortex Crossfire II as an entry level - mid level scope.  I have one in 3-9X40 with a V-Plex and one 4-12X44 with a Dead Drop BDC reticle.  Both are great optics with very clear glass.  Expect to pay about $160 - $180 for them.  STAY AWAY FROM BARSKA!!!  Repeat that three times.  I've also used Bushnell, Burris, and others that are fine scopes, but have settled on Vortex for my backyard war guns.  The 4-12 is great at ranges from 300 to 600 or so, even with my bad eyes.

Why not go for a flip to side magnifier? You probably wont be driving nails at 400 but you'll be plenty effective.
