I installed a free-float rail and would like to remove the piece that holds the original hand guards in place. Then I want to slide the gas block back to eliminate the space between the hand guard and gas block rails.

My question is: will moving the gas block (and the tube) back a quarter of an inch or so effect the performance of the rifle? Do i have to trim the gas tube?

Thanks

Here's a picture of the piece I want to remove.

if you move it back, will the hole in the barrel and the hole in the gas block still line up?  Doesn't seem like it would.
