Because the barrel nut is different and the barrel profile just after the delta ring might be different. You'd only be able to put the LMT rail mount M203 on it, and that doesn't attach to the forward part of the barrel either.

I've got an LMT rail-mounted M203 and I will try it out on a 6940.  I suspect it will work. . .

I've been told a regular M203 bolts right up.  No modifications \ rail mounted grenade launcher necessary.   Just remove the lower rail and off you go.

It'd be pretty silly to have the cutout in the barrel otherwise, no?

I paid good money to have a signature, and I'm not going to let it go to waste.

I didn't know for sure it wouldn't. Correct me if I'm wrong; the M203 has a little nub at the bottom that goes into one of the teeth on a barrel nut. If the 6940 doesn't have a place to put the nub, then it won't work. Also, the M203 has a ring that goes inside the barrel nut. If the 6940's barrel nut won't let that go inside, then it won't work. Does anyone have any pics of the barrel nut?
Also, the M4HB doesn't allow the mounting of an M203, yet has a step down.

We just got 4 new 6940's to replace some older 6920's in the PD. I have never really been a this weapon is the greatest this weapon sucks kind of guy but I have to say the 6940 is fit and finish the best looking and performing rifle I have ever shot out of the box. I and some others were really impressed with the weapons features and how light it was.

Yes it can mount.  That is what the flats behind the handguard cap are for so the back end of a M203 can slip over the barrel.

No poop? I always wondered what the flats were for.

I just noticed something in pictures of my new 6940 (in Iraq so wife had to take pictures until I get home). Where the safe/fire safety selector switch is located, there is supposed to be two raised oval areas, one over the safe and one on the other side where burst/auto would be. Anyone else have a receiver with only one of those ovals present? I have one of those ovals over the safe but not where the auto would be.

There are no grind marks etc and this is not an issue at all for me. Just checking.

All Colt's have them ground down. Some of the newer ones are ground down so that they are flush with the side of the receiver and you can't see them. They just did one one way and the other the other way on your rifle.

OK, I wasn't sure. I have seen some 6920s that had both of the ovals in place. This is not a safe queen and is going to be rode hard and put up wet. I just wanted to see if anyone else has seen this before. At least mine doesn't look like the one I have seen on this site, the one that looked like a 10 year old was let loose with a file and they turned out more square than oval

Question for you 6940 owners, what do you think of the front sight?  I've heard mixed feelings on it (mostly negative), just curious.

I love it!

It's a really solid folding front sight. It will not flip up or down by itself for sure.

I think most people just think it doesn't look cool.

Edit: I can't figure out which part of this front sight is made from titanium as rumored when the 6940 first came out though. Does anyone know?

Its pinned, and it has no slop.

I think it gives shivvers and sphinctorial puckers to the co-witness bandwagon.

Mother of God!
When that red dot sight fails, you will NEVER get those backup sights deployed in time to keep the bad guy from killing you.

that rifle is so damn ugly, it's cute; kinda like a Basset hound puppy, it grows on you...

part of it is the 16.1" barrel...no telling how many times I've talked myself outa having the one shortened on my M4 upper...

I really home the FSB isn't made of titanium as the metal has a HUGE heat expansion rate. by the time it got warmed up good and hot it would be loose around the barrel. I'll take steel on steel thank you,
My strongest opinions are on things I know very little about. so take it all with a grain of salt! :)

the site is titanium. not the base. and I am sure colt is aware of how metal reacts when hot on firearms they make

I thought that titanium was non magnetic? Everything on this sight is magnetic.

I see you installed the Magpul ASAP end plate.

Did you install it yourself?
If so, how much force did it take to overcome the staking on the buffer-tube castle nut?

A shit ton! I tried to push back the stock staking as much as possible, ended up breaking a cheap stock wrench from cdnn, had to run to the fun store to get an armorers wrench, after that it wasn't too bad. Colt definitely doesn't mess around with staking.

I have a vice block set that I used to build my first rifle. I also took it nice and slow, turning it back and forth to loosen it up.

Did you use only the vise block that fits into the mag well?

Was the Colt buffer-tube castle nut pretty much toast by the time you were done?

The staked castle nut is not that tuff to remove if you have a vise and the NSN milspec armorer stock plate from brownells.
The multi wrenches tend to break over time.

What is a "NSN milspec armorer stock plate?"

I ran that as a search query on the Brownells site, and did not get any relevant hits.

Don't think so, but there's a guy on here somewhere who had Adco cut his barrel down to 14.5, they just couldn't guarantee it for suppressor use without taking it off the upper. Looks pretty bad ass though. I'll probably send mine off when the tool becomes available, or buy the 14.5 upper, which ever happens first.

That is mine. It was cut down to like 14.7" and then they perm. pinned the A2 FH. The guys at Adco said without removing the barrel from the upper they could not guarantee the threads to be concentric to the bore and therefore I should not use a supressor with it.

The upper in the pic appears to be the piston variant prototype.  I don't recall the model number.

I love this rifle

I'm not even a good shot

XM193  55gr   10 shot group, just under 2inches (extreme spread)

55gr Hornady FMJ  10 shot group, 1 1/2 inches (extreme spread)

Groups done by me w/ a factory trigger....  ACOG on sandbags  @ 100 yards

I did shoot a 5 shot group w/ the 75gr TAP that was 7/8 inch @ 100 yards.... again factory trigger

FloridaCreekIndian,

I've been looking to have my 6940 cut down to 14.5 and ADCO initially told me "no" due to the lack of the correct barrel nut tool. OK, so I've been waiting for the tool to be released then I saw your reply in this thread.

So, I contacted Steve at ADCO and asked if I could get the "not guarateed for suppressor use" cut down job and he says they still can't do it the way you report that they did.

Do you have a special friend at ADCO? Are you sure it was ADCO?

What is the holdup on the wrench?

Is this not a part that a machine shot could fabricate on their own?  It shouldn't be that hard to look at the barrel nut and make a wrench to fit it...

Picked up my 6940 the first week of November 2009.  Have shot it on two seperate occasions before but no decent pics.  Went to the Gun show today in Chantilly,VA and Silver Eagle Group 50 yard indoor range later on.

My baby.

And how she shoots..

More accurate than I am.  Yes that is a full 30 round magazine shooting basically the size of a quarter.

Unfortunately the range shut us down early today. I still need to come up 2 clicks and to the right 1 to have her perfectly zero'ed in on the bullseye.

Will be taking a carbine class with www.ccjatraining.com in the next few months.

Some people have asked me about weight with the Holo optic, 3x mag, FTS mount, Vert forward grip and light..

Heres your answers..

Weight unloaded 9.0 lbs

Weight full 30 round windowed Pmag  10.2 lbs

Weight full 30 round windowed Pmag & Vickers AA double padded combat sling with quick adjustment slider, quick disconnect connectors.  10.6 lbs
